Primera División Argentina, Apertura 2010 - Fecha 10

Independiente celebrate.

After the glut of high scoring games in fecha 9, a glance at the scores would give the impression this round was much less exciting, but it would be wrong.

Round 10 started with the leaders Estudiantes de La Plata facing newly promoted Olimpo de Bahía Blanca. The game was fairly well balanced until Gabriel Mercado pulled off a shameless dive to con the referee into awarding a penalty. Olimpo finished the game with only 9 men and are deep in relegation trouble with only two wins and eight defeats in their opening tem games..

Quilmes, also promoted last season fill the other automatic relegation place and are the only team in the division without a win. They scored a dramatic 92nd minute equalizer at Newell's Old Boys to earn yet another draw, their 6th in 10 games .

In new manager Antonio Mohamed's first game, Independiente won the Clásico de Avellaneda (Avellaneda derby) against Racing Club with a goal from Cristian Báez. Colón, the team Mohamed quit during the week to take over at Independiente faired less well, suffering a 6-0 defeat to Vélez Sársfield whose strikers Santiago Silva and Juan Manuel Martínez bagged five goals between them to go joint top of the goalscorers chart with 6 goals each so far this season, leaving Vélez in 2nd place 5 points behind Estudiantes.

Another game to feature a dramatic late equaliser was the Huracán - All Boys clash. The visitors were within seconds of clinching a famous away win when substitute Darío Soplan scored for Huracán in the 93rd minute.

The hugely anticipated clash between reigning champions Argentinos Juniors and free scoring Godoy Cruz ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw, ending Argentinos two game winning streak and Godoy Cruz's record of having scored in every game so far.

Having been beaten by Estudiantes last week San Lorenzo lost again against Lanús, leaving them 10 points off the pace and as good as out of the championship race. Minnows Arsenal de Sarandí are still in it though, a win against Banfield leaving them in 3rd place five points behind the leaders.

Boca Juniors recovered from their dismal run of form to record a 1-2 win at Tigre, ex Tigre player Matías Gimenez refusing to celebrate when he scored the opening goal.

The Monday night clash between River Plate and Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata was hugely significant, as both clubs occupy the relegation playoff spots. The 0-0 draw will be bitterly disappointing to both sides, especially River who have lost most of the momentum gained through their strong start to the season and only have 3 points from their last 4 games.
