Leonel Núñez golazo contra Huracán, Clausura 2011
On 18 June 2011 Huracán faced a tough looking trip to Avellaneda to play Independiente knowing that a win would allow them to avoid automatic relegation. The game did not go well for the visitors who had their goalkeeper sent off, missed a penalty and found themselves 4-1 down going into the last minute when Leonel Núñez scored this cracking individual goal to add a fifth for Independiente. As the final whistle went the Huracán fans were in mourning as their relegation rivals were winning 2-1 against Boca Juniors and about to leapfrog Huracán out of the automatic relegation zone however Cristian Cellay scored a late equaliser for Boca to set up a playoff between Huracán and Gimnasia to determine which of them ends up automatically relegated and which will face Union de Santa Fe in the promotion/relgation playoff.
Andrés Silvera takes advantage of hesitant Colón defending to bag his hat-trick
On 21 May 2011 Independiente striker Andrés Silvera scored a hat-trick against Colón in the 15th round of the Clausura 2011 tournament to secure a valuable 3-1 win which shifted his club away from the Primera División relegation zone. The third goal highlighted some real communication problems in the Colon defence.

Patricio Rodríguez vs Olimpo, Clausura 2011 Argentina
On 15 May 2011 Independiente faced a tough looking trip to Bahía Blanca to play Olimpo in the 14th round of the Clausura 2011 tournament in Argentina. The two sides were involved in the battle to avoid finishing in the relegation places and a win for Olimpo would have lifted them out of the drop zone and above River Plate and Independiente however the reds recorded only their second away win in 22 games against Argentine opposition thanks to this spectacular individual effort from man-of-the-match Patrico Rodríguez.
Iván Vélez miss against Banfield, Clausura 2011
On 27 March 2011 Independiente hosted Banfield in the seventh round of the Clausura 2011 tournament in Argentina. They had enjoyed only one win in their last nineteen games against fellow Argentine sides. They were one nil up and when Iván Vélez missed this chance. Banfield scored an equaliser later in the game which finished 1-1.

Game of the week: Independiente 3-0 Peñarol
At first glance Independiente-Peñarol is an odd choice for game of the week. There were certainly more technically skillful games last week, there were higher scoring games, more dramatic and more controversial ones too however for anyone with a passion for South American football history this was a must watch game between two of the three most successful teams in the history of Copa Libertadores.
It was Independiente's first proper game in the Copa Libertadores since 2004 and perhaps the most iconic opponents they could possibly have faced in such a game. Both sides have been starved of success in recent years given their illustrious histories. Independiente had been without a major trophy since 2002 until they lifted the much derided Copa Sudamericana in order to qualify for the 2011 Copa Libertadores, they could never have done it through their league form having finished 20th and last in the Apertura 2010. Nobody has appeared in more Libertadores finals than Peñarol, but their 9th and last final was way back in 1987. Their league form is overshadowed by history too, they only have one league championship to their names since 2003, a remarkable decline for a side that were once part of an unstoppable duopoly with fierce local rivals Nacional.
Both sides came into the game on the back of some really poor form, Independiente were four games without a win and Peñarol only had one win in five. This poor form showed in the first half, which was not a great footballing exhibition. Things picked up for Independiente in the second half. Their Copa Sudamericana hero Facundo Parra scored the opening goal, defensive midfielder Cristian Pellerano hammered in a second through a crowded penalty area and substitute Andés Silvera sealed the win with a third goal late in the game.

Pablo Ferrari ruled offside vs Independiente, Clausura 2011
On 27 February 2011 Independiente hosted River Plate in the 3rd round of the Clausura 2011 tournament. Independiente needed the win to break their sequence of 13 league games without a win and River Plate knew that a win would allow them to go joint top with Olimpo (another side battling to avoid relegation).
In the first half this River Plate goal from Pablo Ferrari was incorrectly ruled offside by the linesman, at first glance you may think he was right to rule it out but a player cannot be judged to be offside if he is behind the ball and the passing player plays it in a forward direction.
In the end the decision did not cost River any points because Mariano Pavone knocked in an 88th minute winner for the visitors.
Golazo: Cristian Pellerano vs Peñarol, Copa Libertadores 2011
On 24 February 2011 two of the most famous names in the history of the Copa Libertadores faced each other in Group 8 of the 2011 edition of the tournament. The home team Independiente are the record seven time champions and the visitors Peñarol of are the third most successful team with five wins.
After a goalless first half Independiente utterly dominated the second half to secure a 3-0 win. The pick of the goals was this ferocious shot from midfielder Cristian Pellerano.

Match reports
Round 1
Argentine side Godoy Cruz recoreded an impressive 2-1 win against the 2008 champions and Recopa Sudamericana holders LDU Quito on their Copa Libertadores debut. Their goals came from Carlos & Nicolás Sánchez either side of a Neicer Reasco strike for the visitors.
The last two teams to see action in the group stages were two of the most famous names in the history of South American football. Seven time champions Independiente cruized to a 3-0 against Peñarol. The home team is known as the king of cups, a nickname reinforced by their Copa Sudamericana triumph in December. Before this game they had been stuck in a rut of poor form without a win in four games. Peñarol were the perfect opponents in the second half, another team stuck in a bad run of form (one win in six by the final whistle). The Uruguayans were wasteful in posession, easily contained and defensively disorganised. The pick of the action was Cristian Pellerano's long range scorcher that he hammered through a crowded box like a nail.
Round 2
Peñarol recovered in time for their second game in which they took a 1-3 away win against Godoy Cruz. The Uruguayans took the lead within a minute but Rúben Ramírez equalised with an unmarked header before the half hour. The visitors then soaked up a lot of pressure and scored twice on the counter attack. They dealt effectively with dozens of balls played into their box and could have had more goals on the counter. The key player in the Peñarol counter attacking play was Argentine number ten Alejandro Martinuccio.
As expected Liga de Quito continued their devastating home form with a comfortable 3-0 win against Independiente, a result that levels all four teams up on three points after two games, giving some justification for those of us that picked this group out as one of the toughest to call.
Round 3
having started out with two away games Uruguayan side Peñarol put in a strong performance in their first home game of the group stages with a 1-0 win against Liga de Quito. 20 year old Urretaviscaya had a cracking game for the hosts showing an electric turn of pace and some good skills too. Luis Aguilar bagged the only goal of the game lashing in a back post volley dirct from a corner.Peñarol climbed to the top of the table however both sides can remain hopeful of progression having two home games remaining each.
Godoy Cruz recovered from their recent run of poor home results to show that they can still do it on the road inflicting a 1-3 defeat on fellow Argentines Independiente who have now gone sixteen games without a win against Argentine opposition. The home side took the lead through Facundo Parra but Godoy Cruz fought back to claim their first ever away win at the continental level. This result leaves Independiente in all kinds of trouble, they are bottom of the group and two of their three remaining games are away from home.
Round 4
Liga de Quito kept up their remarkable run of home form with a 5-0 demolition of Peñarol, Walter Calderón in great form, terrorising the Uruguayan defence and bagging himself two goals. It was LDU's fifteenth game without defeat at their Casa Blanca fortress in all competitions a run extending back to October 2010. The last time they lost a competitive home game against foreign opposition was a 2-3 defeat by Brazilian side Sport Recife back in April 2009, since then they have won twelve consecutive home games in international tournaments (Sudamericana -8, Recopa -2, Libertadores -2). Both sides are still in with a decent chance of qualification, Liga have bolstered their goal difference and Peñarol have the advantage of playing their last two games at home.
One week later the two Argentine sides lined up for their rematch. Independiente struck an early blow with Matías Defederico scoring a cracking goal in the first minute. Godoy Cruz took around half an hour to recover their composure which is understandable given their unreliable home form.
"El Tomba" found their equaliser in the 34th minute after man of the match Carlos Sánchez put in a decent cross and Rúben Ramírez was allowed a free header. Independiente goalkeeper Hilario Navarro did not cover himself in glory doing a rubbish superman impression and allowing Ramírez an open goal to aim at. Navarro made up for his error in the second half with a couple of good saves and a much more commanding performance. The 1-1 draw meant that Godoy Cruz climbed to the top of the group but they only have two away games remaining while Independiente have now gone 23 away games without a win and are rooted to the bottom of the group and will be out of the tournament if they don't beat Liga de Quito in their next game.
Round 5
Godoy Cruz faced their first two away games on foreign soil in official competition in their last two group games. After a 2-1 defeat against Peñarol in Uruguay they are in serious danger of missing out on qualification. Unless Independiente beat Liga de Quito next week Godoy Cruz will need a win at the Casa Blanca where Liga have not lost in international competition for twelve games since April 2009.
Independiente were eliminated after they could only manage a 1-1 draw at home against Liga de Quito.Leonel Núñez put the Argentine side ahead from the penalty spot but former Racing Club player Hernán Barcos ensured their elimination with a second half equaliser.
Round 6
Independiente were already as good as out before they even kicked off but they can be fairly pleased with a decent 0-1 win against Peñarol in Montevideo. Facundo Parra scored the only goal of the game to give Independiente their first away win in international tournaments since a 0-1 win at Rosario Central in Copa Sudamericana 2003. The game in Montevideo was marred by two sendings off late in the game, Peñarol's Juan Manuel Olivera was sent off for a headbut and Independiente goalkeeper Fabián Assman also saw red for his reaction.
Godoy Cruz knew that they needed a win at Liga's Casa Blanca fortress but they couldn't muster their first ever competitive away win on foreign soil. Luis Bolaños put the hosts ahead in the 48th minute, Hernán Barcos bagged a second on 59 minutes and within three minutes of that the game was up after Carlos Sánchez got himself sent off. This result ensured that Liga joined Peñarol in the knockout round at the expense of both of the groups Argentine sides.

Independiente 0-1 Tigre, Apertura 2010
On 6 February 2011 the final postponed game from the Apertura 2010 championship was played between Independiente and Tigre. The game had been suspended because of Independiente's run to the final of Copa Sudamericana 2010 which they won.
The game had significance for both sides, Tigre's Denis Straqualursi could become tournament joint top scorer with a single goal or overall top scorer with two. Independiente needed to win the game in order to avoid an embarassing bottom of the table finish.
As it turned out Straqualursi got his goal in a 1-0 win and finished the tournament as joint top scorer with Vélez Sársfield's Santiago Silva. Independiente finished bottom of the table.
Golazo: Andrés Pérez rabona goal for San Lorenzo against Independiente
Colombian midfielder Andrés Pérez spent a few years playing in Argentina with Quilmes San Lorenzo and Arsenal de Sarandí. The best moment of his time in Argentine football was probably this famous rabona goal for San Lorenzo against Independiente in a pre season friendly (Torneos de Verano) in 2006.
Golazo: Germán Denis vs Colón, Clausura 2007
back in early 2007 Germán Denis was still a workaday footballer but in the first game of the Cluasura 2007 tournament he hinted at the great things that were to come with this specacular flying back-heel goal for Independiente against his former side Colón in a 1-3 home defeat.
The following season Denis finshed as the top scorer in the Primera Division, earned a call up to the Argentina national team and a6.3 million Euro transfer to Italian side Napoli.
Golazo: José Luis Calderón vs Banfield 1997
José Luis Calderón had a professional football career spanning four different decades (1989-2010). He spent the majority of his career in the Argentine Primera División although he did have short spells in Italy and Mexico too. His most famous goal was a brilliant effort in a 4-0 win against Boca Juniors in 1999, however this long forgotten goal from 1997 was another one of his best.

Goiás were relegated from the Brazilian Serie A before the second leg of their semi-final against Palmeiras which they won 2-1 to progress to the final on away goals. Independiente also progressed on away goals after four goals apiece in their semi-final against holders Liga de Quito.
Goiás vs Independiente (1st leg)
The first leg of the final in Goiânia was far from a classic encounter, both teams showed the kind of form their fans have had to endure all season in their respective leagues, however Goias made the best of the home advantage and some shambolic defending from the visitors to score two goals in the first 21 minutes. The goals were scored by Rafael Moura and Otacilio Neta.
Independiente tried to fight back in the second half but their chances of cutting the deficit were badly damaged when Andrés Silvera got himself sent off for violent conduct after 57 minutes. From that point onwards Independiente did well to keep the pressure on Goiás and prevent the Brazilians from extending their lead, however they will be far from happy to be going into the second leg two goals down and without any of the useful away goals they have relied upon to progress in previous rounds.
Independiente vs Goiás (2st leg)
The second leg of the Copa Sudamericana final finished 3-1 to Independiente with all of the goals coming in a mad 15 minute spell in the first half. Julián Velázquez put the home team ahead on 19 minutes but on 22 minutes Rafael Moura scored for Goiás to restore their two goal advantage. Facundo Parra then scored two goals for Independiente on 26 and 34 minutes. Parra volleyed his second goal and the vital equaliser while sitting on the ground.
In the second half both sides continued to attack but Goiás looked the better passing side and the most likely to score for long spells, they did manage to hit the net but the goal was ruled out by a debatable offside decision. After 90 minutes the game went to extra time since away goals don't count in the final to Independiente's advantage.
Extra time was also goalless despite Rafael Moura hitting the post for Goiás meaning that the 2010 Copa Sudamericana final was the first to be decided on penalties. Independiente scored all five of their penalties to win the tournament, Goiás miss came from 2nd half substitute Felipe who hit the post.
Independiente won the tournament with a decidedly average run of results, of their ten games they won 4, drew 3 and lost 3. The only tie they won outright under the competition rules was their first tie against Argentinos Juniors, they beat Defensor Sporting Club on goal difference and progressed through the next two rounds on away goals before winning the final on penalties.
Despite winning the tournament with a rather average run of results, CONMEBOL will be relieved that Independiente are the champions, which means that the South American confederation will avoid the embarrassment of seeing a 2nd division side gain automatic entry into the prestigious Copa Libertadores tournament next year.

Facundo Parra, sit down volley against Goiás
On 8 December 2010 Argentine side Independiente hosted Goiás from Brazil in the final of the 2010 Copa Sudamericiana. The home team needed to win by at least two goals after losing the first leg 2-0 in Brazil. All of the goals came in a hectic 15 minute spell in the first half, Facundo Parra made the score 3-1 with this unusual lying down volley.
The game finished 3-3 and went to extra time and then penalties which Independiente won to claim their first international trophy in 15 years.
Game of the week: 24 November 2010, LDU Quito 3-2 Independiente
This weeks pick as game of the week is yet another game from Independiente's Copa Sudamericana campaign. On 18 November the Argentine team traveled to the high altitude fortress of La Casa Blanca in Quito to face Liga Deportivo Universitario de Quito who are unbeaten on their own pitch in the tournament since 2007 in the first leg of their semi-final encounter.
The first goal of the game was a long range strike from Juan Manuel Salguiro to put the home team one goal up at half time. Independiente started the 2nd half slowly and within 12 minutes they were 3-0 down and at risk of falling so far behind that they would have no hope of overturning the defecit back in Avellaneda.
Within two minutes of going three goals behind, Néstor Silvera broke Liga's momentum with a vital away goal for Independiente which was clearly scored from an offside position. Six minutes later Lucas Mareque scored the second excellent long ranger of the game to make it 3-2. Liga came close to extending their lead on several occasions, they were denied by a brilliant double save from Independiente keeper Hilario Navarro who had an outstanding night despite shipping three goals. The second leg on Thursday next week should also be a contender for next week's game of the week.

Golazo: José Luis Calderón vs Boca Juniors, Clausura 1999
In the 17th round of the Clausura 1999 tournament Independiente hosted Boca Juniors who were unbeaten in 40 league games. José Luis Calderón put in the performance of his lifetime for the home team, scoring a hat-trick which included this magnificent goal. Independiente won 4-0, Boca Juniors lost their unbeaten record but won the league title anyway because River Plate lost at home against Racing Club 2-3.
Lujos: Sergio Agüero caño vs Franco Sosa
Before Sergio Agüero joined Spanish side Atlético Madrid he was an iconic player for Independiente. he broke Diego Maradona's record as the youngest player ever to play in the Primera División at only 15 years and 35 days. he scored loads of spectacular goals for the club and had plenty of tricks and skills too for a teenager including this nutmeg against Gimnasia y Esgrima's Franco Sosa.

3 October 2010: Colombian striker Wilmer Medina scored this wonderful flying back heel in an entertaining 2-2 draw between his side Deportes Tolima and Argentine side Independiente in the quarter finals of Copa Sudamericana 2010.
Game of the week: 4 November 2010: Deportes Tolima 2-2 Independiente
This is the second game from Independiente's Copa Sudamericana 2010 campaign selected as game of the week. This game between Deportes Tolima of Colombia and Argentine side Independiente featured a controversial penalty decision, an absolutely brilliant flying back-heel goal from Deportes Tolima's Wilder Medina and a great free kick from Rodrigo Marangoni to give the home side the lead and a 78th minute equaliser for Independiente.
The rematch back in Argentina promises to be another contender for the game of the week series.

What ever happened to? Claudio Marangoni

| Marangoni was one of four Argentinians to play in England in the early 1980s. Osvaldo Ardiles, Marangoni, Alex Sabella & Ricardo Villa (left to right). |
Marangoni who was born on 11 November 1954 was a trainee at local club Rosario Central but never played for the first team. He made his professional debut for Chacarita Juniors in 1974 aged 19 and in 1976 he joined San Lorenzo where he played 135 league games before his move to England.
In the late 1970s Marangoni was courted by Ipswich Town and Chelsea before eventually signing for Sunderland. He only played one season at Roker Park, scoring 3 goals in 20 league games. Marangoni has claimed that he couldn't get along with the man management style of then manager Ken Knighton, who demanded absolute subservience from his players. He also found it hard to adapt to the foreign lifestyle and the different mentality of his team mates. In one example he claimed that he messed about with an unnamed Sunderland team mates' car for a practical joke, but the owner of the car got so angry that he had to be restrained from attacking him for it.
In 1980 he returned to Argentina where he played for San Lorenzo's fiercest rivals Húracan between 1980 and 1981 without much success.
In 1982 he joined Independiente who had not won a trophy since 1978 when their blistering run of successes in the 1970s had come to an end. He fitted straight into the first team alongside great players such as Jorge Burruchara, Enzo Trossero, Ricardo Giusti and Ricardo Bochini (who he regards as the 2nd greatest Aregntine footballer of all time).
Under manager José Pastoriza the team revived their fortunes, finishing as runners up in Metropolitano 1982 behind the Estudiantes de La Plata team containing Alejandro Sabella who also had a spell in English football with Leeds and Sheffield United. Independiente were again runners up in Nacional 1983, losing to Estudiantes in the final.
They eventually won the Metropolitano championship of 1983 by beating their fierce local rivals Racing Club 2-0 in the last game of the season to clinch the championship one point above Marangoni's former club San Lorenzo and in beating Racing Club they consigned them to relegation for the first time in their history.
In 1984 Marangoni featured in the Independiente team that won their 7th Copa Libertadores championship, a record that stands to this day. this success qualified them to play against Liverpool FC in the intercontinental Cup which was the first meeting between an English and Argentine team since the Falklands War, Independiente felt that they were playing the game on behalf of their nation in what was more than just a sports encounter.
Independiente won the game 1-0 with a goal from José Percudani and after the game the players did not celebrate in the dressing room because they felt it would be disrespectful to all of the dead and injured in the Falklands War to celebrate over a game of football.
Around that time Marangoni had been offered the chance to return to England to play for Southampton. he claims that after the Intercontinental Cup final he told Kenny Dalglish that he was coming back to England and Dalglish told him "Claudio, stay in Argentina at least you have some sunshine there".
it was during this successful period that Marangoni made his 9 appearances for the Argentina national team, he was part of the Copa América 1983 squad however he fell out with manager Carlos Bilardo in 1985 and was not selected for the 1986 World Cup squad.
Marangoni played for Independiente until 1988, making 237 league appearances and scoring 25 league goals for the club.
On 27 August 1988 Marangoni joined Argentine giants Boca Juniors where he was part of the team that won the Supercopa Sudamericana in 1989 to end an 8 year trophy drought at the club, he scored the first goal in their 2-0 win in the semi final against Brazilian side Grêmio, before they beat his former side Independiente on penalties in the final.
In 1990 he was in the Boca Juniors team that won the Recopa Sudamericana. He made 93 appearances for Boca Juniors in all competitions between 1988 and his retirement in 1990, scoring 7 goals.
Throughout his playing career Marangoni pursued other interests, he qualified as a physiotherapist, obtained his coaching qualifications, attended college to learn English and in 1984 he established the Escuela Modelo de Fútbol y Deportes, a sporting academy which he still runs today.
Marangoni did try his hand at football management with Banfield, but he fell out with the directors because they kept trying to interfere with team affairs. he has since claimed that being a football manager is easier than being the director of 40 football academies, but he doesn't do it because there is no job security in football management.
In Argetnina Marangoni is considered as a great number 5 (centre half back) what would be called a defensive or holding midfielder in modern parlance. The fact that he has played for three of the big five teams in Argentina (San Lorenzo, Independiente & Boca Juniors), represented the Argentina national team and owns a reasonably large medal collection could be used as supporting evidence.
When asked Marangoni said that the best number 5s he has ever seen were Gérson, Franz Beckenbaur, Fernando Redondo and Roberto Telch. When asked about modern football he avoided the urge to get nostalgic about the past as many other ex-pros would be unable to, saying that modern football is better and that if all the Aregntinians currently playing abroad were to return to Argentina, they would have the best league in the world.
Marangoni is fondly remembered by Argentine football fans, however in England he was selected in 39th position by the Times in their list of the 50 Worst players ever to play in the English top flight. On closer inspection their argument for inclusion is somewhat diminished by their claim that he was a striker with a poor strike rate of 3 goals in 20 games, when he was actually a number 5. A modern equivalent would be trying to argue that Javier Mascherano was Liverpool's worst ever player because 1 goal in 94 league games is a dreadful goalscoring record for a striker.
It is clear from the fact that he only stayed one season, that Marangoni did not settle in English football, however ever since leaving Sunderland in 1980 he has enjoyed success.
