Andrés Silvera takes advantage of hesitant Colón defending to bag his hat-trick

On 21 May 2011 Independiente striker Andrés Silvera scored a hat-trick against Colón in the 15th round of the Clausura 2011 tournament to secure a valuable 3-1 win which shifted his club away from the Primera División relegation zone. The third goal highlighted some real communication problems in the Colon defence.

Marcos Litre gift

On 9 April 2011 Olimpo played Colón in Santa Fe in the ninth round of the Clausura 2011 tournament. The visitors were already one goal ahead when Marcos Litre made his first appearance of the Clausura as a second half substitute. Within one minute he found himself presented with a nearly unmissable shot after a mixup between Colón defender Juan Quiroga and goalkeeper Diego Pozo. He tapped the ball in for his first ever top flight goal to secure an impressive 0-2 away win for his club.

Juan Román Riquelme vs Colón, Clausura 2011

On 27 March Argentine giants Boca Juniors faced a tough trip to Santa Fe to play Colón in the 7th round of the Clausura 2011 tournament. Boca had suffered a run of three consecutive defeats and lay down in 17th position in the table. Juan Román Riquelme secured a vital 0-1 win with this intelligent free kick to beat Colón goalkeeper Diego Pozo at his near post. I was particularly pleased with this goal as I predicted a 0-1 away win for Boca Juniors in my Clausura weekly preview article.

Esteban Fuertes vs Godoy Cruz, Clausura 2011 - Golazo

On 6 March 2011 Godoy Cruz played Colón in the fourth round of the Clausura 2011 tournament. The home team were attempting to recover from a 1-3 mauling by Uruguayan side Peñarol in their midweek 2011 Copa Libertadores game but went down to another home defeat.

Colón's key player in this 2-3 win was veteran striker and club legend Esteban Fuertes who scored this long range scorcher to give them the half time lead and also scored the 87th minute winner.

Golazo: Germán Denis vs Colón, Clausura 2007

back in early 2007 Germán Denis was still a workaday footballer but in the first game of the Cluasura 2007 tournament he hinted at the great things that were to come with this specacular flying back-heel goal for Independiente against his former side Colón in a 1-3 home defeat.

The following season Denis finshed as the top scorer in the Primera Division, earned a call up to the Argentina national team and a6.3 million Euro transfer to Italian side Napoli.

Golazo: Erik Lamela, River Plate vs Colón, Apertura 2010

River Plate teenager Erik Lamela was attracting international attention before he even scored his first goal for the club. When he did hit the net for the first time in a game against Colón on 5 December 2010 at the age of 18, it was a fine dink over the goalkeeper to finish off a brilliant team goal. A goal of such quality is only likely to increase the amount of international attention and speculation about possible transfers.

Esteban Fuertes is the all time top scorer for Colón and it is no wonder given his ability to bag goals without even trying.

What ever happened to? Esteban Fuertes

In 1999 Derby County purchased Argentine striker Esteban "Bichi" Fuertes from Colón de Santa Fe for £2.3 million, the transfer took over 3 months to complete due to the complexities of the immigration system. Fuertes rewarded the patience of the fans and manager Jim Smith by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win against Everton on his home debut.

Fuertes' Derby career came to an abrupt end in November 1999 at Heathrow airport. Fuertes was returning with his Derby County team mates from a training camp in Portugal when he was refused entry back into the UK and put on a flight back to Argentina. The official reason given was that the Italian passport that he had used to bypass the strict rules for non-EU immigrants had been forged or tampered with.

Derby County initially loaned the player back to Colón, where he had an excellent Clausura tournament, eventually finishing as the top scorer with 17 goals in 18 games, the first Colón player ever to finish as top scorer in the Argentine league.

Derby eventually managed to sell the player to RC Lens of France and even turned a half million pound profit on the player in the £2.8 million transfer. Fuertes also played for Tenerife in Spain before returning to South America in 2002 to play for Argentine giants River Plate.

Fuertes has become an iconic player for Argentine side  Colón.

After a single season with River Plate he returned to Colón in 2003. He has become an iconic player for the club, breaking all kinds of records, he is their highest scorer, the player with the most appearances for the club, the highest scorer ever in the province of Santa Fe and on 20 May 2009 he became the oldest player ever to make his debut for the Argentina national side when he was picked by manager Diego Maradona to play in a friendly against Panama at the age of 36. 

Fuertes is so popular with Colón fans that he even has a song composed in his honour called "Bichi Gol" by Los Palmeras.


Fuertes has scored 123 goals for Colón and well over 200 in his career, he is still hammering in the goals and at the age of 37 he is showing no sign of stopping.
