Independiente 0-1 Tigre, Apertura 2010
On 6 February 2011 the final postponed game from the Apertura 2010 championship was played between Independiente and Tigre. The game had been suspended because of Independiente's run to the final of Copa Sudamericana 2010 which they won.
The game had significance for both sides, Tigre's Denis Straqualursi could become tournament joint top scorer with a single goal or overall top scorer with two. Independiente needed to win the game in order to avoid an embarassing bottom of the table finish.
As it turned out Straqualursi got his goal in a 1-0 win and finished the tournament as joint top scorer with Vélez Sársfield's Santiago Silva. Independiente finished bottom of the table.

Game of the week: 15 December 2010 Racing 0-2 Vélez
On 12 December 2010 the Apertura 2010 championship in Argentina went down to the last round of fixtures. It looked like the tournament was destined for a championship playoff after Vélez Sársfield established a 2-0 lead against Racing Club a brilliant individual goal from Juan Manuel Martínez and an exceptional free kick from Maxi Moralex, and Estudiantes were being held 0-0 by Arsenal. It took two late goals for Estudiantes' ex Vélez striker Hernán López to secure a 5th domestic championship for the La Plata side.
Not only were the two goals brilliantly taken, but the atmosphere created by the Racing Club fans was amazing.

Mauricio Caranta gifts Mariano Pavone a goal
On the final day of the Apertura 2010 tournament Lanús hosted River Plate in a game that would guaruntee a 4th place finish to the winners. River plate were already 1-3 up when Lanús goalkeeper Cesár Carranza gifted Mariano Pavone his 2nd goal of the game.
The match finished Lanús 1-4 River Plate and River claimed 4th place.

Golazo: Juan Manuel Martínez vs Racing Club, Apertura 2010

Estudiantes had a two point lead over Vélez meaning that there were still three distinct possibilities. If Estudiantes equaled or bettered Vélez's result they would win the championship, if Estudiantes lost and Vélez won the championship would have gone to Liniers instead. The third tantalising possibility was a one off championship playoff which would have occurred if the top two teams finished level on points, irrespective of goal difference.
It looked like the Apertura 2010 tournament was destined for a playoff after Vélez established a 2-0 lead with a brilliant individual goal from Juan Manuel Martínez and an exceptional free kick from Maxi Moralez, and Estudiantes were being held 0-0 by Arsenal. It took two late goals for Estudiantes' ex Vélez striker Hernán López to secure a 5th domestic championship for the La Plata side.
In the first game of the final round All Boys recovered from conceding two goals in the first seven minutes against Godoy Cruz to draw 2-2, their equaliser came from a penalty in the 4th minute of injury time.
San Lorenzo finished off a poor season by their standards with a 2-1 win against Banfield. During the week Carlos Abdo was elected as San Lorenzo's new president, he said that keeping Ramón Diaz as manager would be his main priority. As for Banfield it was not the first time this season they have scored a wonderful goal but gone on to lose the game.
Colón's turbulent season ended with a 1-0 win against Newell's Old Boys, the only goal of the game came late in the second half and added a little bit of excitement to an otherwise pretty uninspiring game.
There were a few more interesting games this weekend, however the conclusion of the intruiging race for the last Copa Libertadores qualification place concluded early when the spot was given to Independiente after they won the Copa Sudamericana in midweek. On Monday they lost 1-0 away at Huracán who leapfrogged them out of last position, so Argentina's fifth representatives in the Libertadores lie in 20th position in the table.
The one remaining game (Independiente vs Tigre) could be quite important, with a win Independiente could finish as high as 18th in the table and leave Gimnasia y Esgrima de la Plata to suffer the humiliation of a bottom of the table finish. The other important issue that will have to wait until the outstanding game is played is that of the division's top scorer. Denis Stracqualursi netted his 10th of the season for Tigre in a 1-1 draw against Argentinos Juniors meaning that if he scores against Independiente he will finish as joint top scorer with Santiago Silva and if he bags a brace he will win the acolade outright.
Gimnasia y Esgrima could still end the season in last place but they can be pleased that they finally bagged an away goal in their 1-1 draw against Boca Juniors in la bombonera. They may however have preferred to have finished in last place and lost the game they drew 0-0 against Vélez which ended up handing the title to their local rivals Estudiantes.
Boca Juniors won't be happy to have dropped points against Gimnasia, however there was yet another personal milestone for Martín Palermo. He opened the scoring with his 300th career goal. 230 for Boca Juniors, 36 for Estudiantes, 21 for Villarreal, 3 for CD Alavés, 1 for Real Betis and 9 for the Argentina national team.
Olimpo and Quilmes; the two newly promoted teams that got off to really poor starts to the Apertura faced each other with the chance for one of them to reach the 1.00 points per game mark. The game was won by Quilmes with a 2nd minute goal from Danilo Gerlo meaning that they averaged exactly 1 point per game, a remarkable achievement given the fact that they failed to win any of their first 13 games before winning four of their last six. Olimpo are only one point behind on 18/19 meaning that Gimnasia, Huracán, River plate and Tigre may be spending much of the Clausura looking over their shoulders.
At the end of the 2010 Clausura River Plate ended their season with a humiliating 1-5 home defeat to Tigre, in the Apertura they faced a potentially difficult trip to Lanús. River's youth came good with a fine 1-4 win which featured a calamitous mistake from Lanús keeper Mauricio Caranta to gift Mariano Pavone his 2nd of the game and red cards for the Lanús manager Gabriel Schürrer and defender Santiago Hoyos.

Game of the week: 8 December 2010 River Plate 0-4 Estudiantes
In the penultimate round of the Apertura 2010 championship in Argentina the league leaders Estudiantes de La Plata faced a tough looking trip to El Monumental to face a resurgent River Plate side, who had recovered from their slump in form that cost Angel Cappa his job.
River Plate's squad of young players like Rogelio Funes Mori and Erik Lamela mixed with experienced veterans like Ariel Ortega and Matías Almeyda had found their form again under caretaker manager J.J. López, however Estudiantes gave them a pasting in this game to put themselves within one win of securing their fifth Argentine league championship.

The first game of the penultimate round of fixtures saw one of the teams with the worst away records face one of the worst teams in the division. All Boys only had three draws and five defeats from their eight away games while Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata were rock bottom of the division. A 3-1 win for Gimnasia broke their four game losing strak and lifted them off the bottom of the table but not away from the relegation playoff position they have occupied all season.
Godoy Cruz faced Racing Club in an entertaining game between two of the better sides in the tournament. It finished 1-1 but the score should surely have been higher, both teams chose to play open attacking football and had abundant chances to score, Godoy Cruz hit the woodwork twice and Racing Club once, the two goals were both excellent, Jairo Castillo scored a classy opener for the home side before Iván Pillud fired in a piledriver of an equaliser. Racing will be bitterly disappointed that they can now no longer qualify for the Copa Libertadores after Argentina's 5th qualification spot went to their fierce local rivals Independiente after they won the 2010 Copa Sudamericana a couple of hours after the end of this game.
Olimpo faced a tough trip to Rosario to face Newell's Old Boys,after acumulating only one point from their nine away games not many people would have backed Olimpo for the win, however they did win the game 0-1 with a first half goal from Cristian Villanueva.
The outgoing champions Argentinos Juniors lost at home to Gabriel Schürrer's Lanús side and Quilmes found some more much needed points with a 1-0 win against a struggling San Lorenzo side, their third win in five games after their dismal 13 game winless start to the season.
Arsenal de Sarandí took another massive step towards their best ever finish in the Primera División with a 2-1 win against Colón and Banfield played out a 0-0 draw with Boca Juniors.
Independiente's game against Tigre has been postponed due to their participation in the Copa Sudamericana final on Wednesday.

Golazo: Erik Lamela, River Plate vs Colón, Apertura 2010
River Plate teenager Erik Lamela was attracting international attention before he even scored his first goal for the club. When he did hit the net for the first time in a game against Colón on 5 December 2010 at the age of 18, it was a fine dink over the goalkeeper to finish off a brilliant team goal. A goal of such quality is only likely to increase the amount of international attention and speculation about possible transfers.

The two giants of Argentine football both seem to have rediscovered some form under interim managers, River Plate won 1-2 at Colón with a fabulous team goal finished off by their latest wonderkid Erik Lamela and a last minute winner from Mariano "Tanque" Pavone. Boca Juniors beat Quilmes 1-0 to record their 2nd win in three games since the departure of Claudio Borghi.
The first game of the round took place on Wednesday night as an early appitiser for the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final between Independiente and Goiás later in the evening. Arsenal recorded a 1-1 draw against Olimpo, a disappointing result for both teams. It is now mathematically impossible for Arsenal to win the championship and Olimpo are still struggling to average one point per game when 1.25 points is a reasonable benchmark for survival.
Primera División new boys All Boys continued to look like one of the strongest sides in the division with a 2-1 win against Banfield. Both of the home sides goals came from rebounds off the post, The first; a shot from Mauro Matos was turned into his own net by an unfortunate Fabio Segovia and the second rebound was scored by Matos himself. Banfield scored a magnificent goal in the second half, not the first time this season they have scored wonderful goals and suffered defeat. The end of the game was marred when All Boys' Hugo Barrientos elbowed Rúben Ramírez in the face causing the Banfield midfielder to go on an emotional blood soaked rant.
Racing Club hammered Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata, the final score was only 2-0 but the result was never really in doubt after Gabriel Hauche scored a wonderful backheel nutmeg against the goalkeeper to put the home side one goal ahead. In the second half Racing extended their lead and Gimnasia were reduced to 10 men. The away side are bottom of the table and only outside the automatic relegation zone because of the weakness of the two newly promoted sides Quilmes and Olimpo.
There were a couple of 0-0 draws on Sunday between Lanús and Independiente and between San Lorenzo and Newell's Old Boys. the entertainment was provided by Vélez with their remarkable 0-4 win against Godoy Cruz and by Tigre who beat Huracán 3-1 with a couple of goals from Denis Stracqualursi who is now the second highest goalscorer in the Apertura 2010 tournament.

Golazo: Gabriel Hauche (taco y caño) vs Gimnasia La Plata, Apertura 2010
On 3 December 2010 Gabriel Hauche scored the opening goal for Racing Club against Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata in the 17th round of the Apertura 2010 tournament with a brilliant back-heel nutmeg on the goalkeeper. Racing Club eventually won the game 2-0.
En contra: Fabio Segovia, All Boys vs Banfield, Apertura 2010
On 3 December 2010 All Boys hosted Banfield in the 17th round of the Apertura 2010 tournament. The opening goal was this unfortunate own goal from Fabio Segovia who turned a rebound off the post into his own net. All Boys scored a second goal after another rebound off the post before Banfield hit a brilliant consolation goal to make the final score 2-1.

On 17 October 2010 Godoy Cruz hosted River Plate in the Apertura 2010 tournament. The first goal of the game was this unbelievable own goal from Leonardo Sigali. Godoy Cruz recovered to earn a 2-2 draw.

| "Gata" Fernandéz made up for a couple of bad misses last weekend by heading the winning goal for Estudiantes against Independiente. |
"El Tomba" won the game 1-3, their 3rd 1-3 away win this season and their 15th point away from home. After a goal apiece in the first half Godoy Cruz won the game in the second half with a brilliant long range strike from David Ramírez and an unfortunate own goal from Abel Masuero They are the highest scorers in the division with 29 goals in 16 games, 6 ahead of 2nd highest scorers Vélez Sársfield and they boast the best away record in the league too. They lie in 4th place in the table and will play in the Copa Libertadores for the first time in their history in 2011.
Arsenal de Sarandí continued their excellent season with a 2-1 win against San Lorenzo to jump back ahead of Godoy Cruz into 3rd place. They had to come back from a goal behind to score the winning goal in the very last seconds of the game. After a seven game unbeaten start to the season San Lorenzo's form has disappeared, they have only won one of their last nine games and are without a win in five.
On Sunday the leaders Estudiantes faced a trip to Avellaneda to play Independiente, who still seemed giddy from reaching their first international final in 15 years on Thursday. After a goal apiece in the early stages of each half the game seemed to be heading for a draw until Gata Fernandéz scored a looping header in the 85th minute. After a two footed lunge in injury time Enzo Pérez was sent off for the league leaders with a straight red card on top of the yellow he already had. Estudiantes may miss him while he serves his suspension.
2nd Placed Vélez Sársfield beat Tigre 2-1 at home in the last game of the round on Tuesday to close the gap back to two points and ensure that the championship race will last until at least the penultimate round of the championship. Vélez's goalscorers were Santiago Silva and Juan Manuel Martínez who are joint top of the goalscoring chart with 9 goals each.
There were a number of other intriguing ties, two of the newly promoted teams Quilmes and All Boys faced each other on Saturday. All Boys dominated the game and were cruising to a 0-1 away win against the bottom team in the division, until their goalkeeper made a horrific feckup to present an unmissable goalscoring opportunity to Juan Morales who made it 1-1, then 33 year old striker Bernardo Romeo scored a routine header for the home side to give them a 2-1 result and their 2nd win in a 3 game unbeaten sequence after a pathetic 13 game winless streak to kick off their first season back in the top flight since their "Derby Countyesque" demise last time they played at the highest level.
Saturday's other game was also pretty special, featuring 3 goals in a four minute spell in the early stages of the first half. the rest of the game was far from boring too. For the first time in years Racing Club are beginning to look like a decent side, had Banfield striker Rubén Ramírez been awarded either of his two fairly convincing penalty appeals we could easily have seen a different result. Banfield's equaliser was brilliantly worked but they conceded to the winning goal to Claudio Beiler only a minute later after he was allowed a free run itno the Banfield penalty area straight from the kick off.
Boca Juniors also under instruction from caretaker manager Roberto Pompei faced a a tough game in Rosario against Newell's Old Boys, the winning goal in a 1-0 win was scored in the 85th minute by 2nd half Newell's substitute Luis Rodríguez.
The other new boys in the division Olimpo faced one of their grandstand fixtures, a trip to El Monumental to play River Plate who extended their two game unbeaten start under interim manager J.J. Lopez with a 1-0 win. it was easy to see why these two teams are both battling to avoid relegation, the defending was dismal at times and both teams squandered loads of the resulting chances to score.
The following day River Plate crept out of the relegation zone for the first time this season after Huracán were beaten 1-2 at home by Colón. Things have turned sour for ""el globo" they have lost four consecutive games since and their only win in the last 10 games was that astonishing 3-0 win in the "clásico porteño".
In the penultimate game of the round Argentinos Juniors played like the champions they are for patches in a convincing 3-0 win against Colón. Franco Niell looked a class act again with a goal and an excellent assist, it can only be his short stature that keeps the European clubs from snapping him up. Colón were poor but veteran former Derby County striker Bichi Fuertes looked dangerous for them and midfielder Damián Díaz had a fairly good game too.

What's that old cliche? You're never more vulnerable than when you've just scored.
On Saturday 28 November 2010 Banfield hosted Racing Club in the 16th round of the Apertura 2010 tournament in the Argentine Primera Division. All of the goals came in a quickfire five minute spell midway through the first half. Banfield scored a brilliantly worked equaliser but then less than a minute later Claudio Bieler scored the winner after only 24 minutes of the game, a perfect example of a team forgetting the the old managerial plea, "when you've just scored try to keep calm and concentrate".

Nicolás Cambiasso goalkeeper mistake
To be fair to him, Nicolás Cambiasso could never have been expecting such a long range backpass, however it is still no excuse for what happened next in this game between divisional new boys Quilmes and All Boys in the 16th round of the Apertura 2010 tournament in the Argentine Primera Division 2010-11 season.

Golazo: Franco Niell Olimpo vs Argentinos Juniors, Apertura 2010
Both Olimpo and Argentinos Juniors had dismal starts to the Primera División Apertura 2010 tournament. The reigning champions failed to win any of their first nine games and Olimpo found themselves in the automatic relegation place and miles from safety after a six game losing streak.
Both teams began to recover in October and by their encounter on 22 November they had the best recent form of all the teams outside the top 7 places. Olimpo dominated the game until this "chilena" from Argentinos Juniors striker Franco Niell earned the champions a point.
Golazo: Sergio Aruajo, Boca Juniors 2-1 Arsenal, Apertura 2010
After the resignation of Claudio Borghi as Boca Juniors manager after defeat to River Plate in the Superclásico and the instillation of youth team manager Roberto Pompei as interim manager, it was a curiosity that his first opponents were Arsenal de Sarandí. The same side that he faced in his first game in his first stint as Boca's interim manager back in April 2010.
Boca had gone over a month without scoring a goal before Sergio Aruajo scored his first for the club to end their 322 minute goal drought. Arsenal equalised but Boca Juniors club legend Martín Palermo netted the winner to lift Boca to the lofty heights of 10th in the table.

Newell's Old Boys suffered a 2-0 away defeat to Primera División new boys All Boys,who are currently averaging 1.467 points per game. If they can maintain this kind of form they will easily avoid relegation.
With Newell's and Banfield losing Racing Club had a golden opportunity to leapfrog them into the Copa Libertadores places if they could beat bottom of the table Quilmes, however the game ended 1-1, with both sides missing glorious opportunities to win the game in the last couple of minutes.
Estudiantes cruised to a 2-0 win against Huracán, it should have been more but "Gata" Fernández wasted 2 glorious opportunities in the 59th and 60th minutes. The Early moments of the 2nd half were disrupted when the Huracán fans hurled dozens of flares onto the pitch. Title rivals Vélez faced a trip to La Plata on Sunday to play Gimnasia y Esgrima. Anyone would have expected Gimnasia to lose on purpose against Estudiantes' main title rivals given what happened back in 2007 when some Gimnasia fans made death threats against their own players in order to make them lose against Estudiantes' then title rivals Boca Juniors, however they ground out a 0-0 draw to allow Estudiantes to open a 2 point lead at the top of the table.
San Lorenzo and River Plate faced each other in a vital game for both clubs, San Lorenzo need to turn around their dismal run of form and River Plate needed to build on the momentum of their Superclásico win on Tuesday, a dismal 0-0 draw was the result, which leaves both teams in mid table obscurity after strong starts to the season.
Boca Juniors' interim manager Roberto Pompei faces Arsenal in his first game back in charge, the same opponents he faced in his first game as interim manager back in April 2010. By the time Sergio Aruajo scored his first ever goal for Boca they had gone 322 minutes without a goal. Arsenal equalised in the second half through Lisandro Lopez (no - not that one) before Boca's all time top scorer Martín Palermo hit the winner.
On Monday relegation strugglers Olimpo hosted reigning champions Argentinos Juniors, the game ended 1-1 meaning that Olimpo are unbeaten in 3 games for the first time this season. It could have been better for the team from the coastal town of Bahía Blanca, they led the game but an 81st minute bicycle kick from Franco Niell was enough to earn the champions a 1-1 draw.
Antonio Mohamed faced his first trip back to Colón since he abandoned the club to take over as manager of Independiente earlier this season. Maxi Velázquez opened the scoring with yet another powerful long range strike for the Avellaneda giants in the first half. In the 2nd half the home team had most of the best chances and Esteban Fuertes headed the equaliser. Colón would probably have won the game without the fine performance of Independiente goalkeeper Adrián Gabbarini.
In the last game of the weekend Tigre faced a trip to Lanús who were playing their first game under interim manager Gabriel Schürrer after Luis Zubeldía's resignation on the back of 4 straight defeats the previous week. Lanús won the game with two goals from Uruguayan Mario Regueiro and a helpful controversial red card against Claudio Pérez from the referee. On 13 November 2010 Tigre hosted league leaders Estudientes de La Plata in the 14th round of Apertura 2010. As the game was going into the last few minutes of the 2nd half the home team were down to 10 players after the dismissal of Román Martínez but 2-1 ahead.
Instead of running the ball into the corner flag to kill time they were intent on playing attacking football to the end, an approach epitomised by this play from 20 year old substitute Rubén Botta.
