Iván Vélez miss against Banfield, Clausura 2011

On 27 March 2011 Independiente hosted Banfield in the seventh round of the Clausura 2011 tournament in Argentina. They had enjoyed only one win in their last nineteen games against fellow Argentine sides. They were one nil up and when Iván Vélez missed this chance. Banfield scored an equaliser later in the game which finished 1-1.

Errado: Marlon de Jesús vs Uruguay U-20, 2011 Sudamericano sub-20 championship

On 3 February 2011 Ecuadorian striker managed this incredible miss against Uruguay U-20 in the 2011 South American Youth Championships. The game finished 1-1 and as this was late in the game the miss could be said to have cost Ecuador two points. To his credit De Jesús has been one of several quality players in the Ecuador side and they still have a good chance of qualifying to play in the Under-20 World Cup in Colombia.

Errado: Dani Alves vs Real Sociedad

On Sunday 12 December Barcelona played Real Sociadad in La Liga. Real won the game 5-0 with a magnificent performance but it really should have been six but for this unbelievable miss from their Brazilian full back Dani Alves.

Errado: Jonas, Boyacá Chicó 0-1 Grêmio, Copa Libertadores 2009

On March 2009 Brazilian side Grêmio travelled to Colombia to face Boyacá Chicó in a Copa Libertadores tie, they won the game 0-1 but the result was overshadowed by this pair of misses from Jonas.

The following season Jonas did another famous miss in a game against Grêmio Prudente.

Errados: Diego Forlan vs Juventus

Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan is well known as the top scorer in the 2010 World Cup and the winner of the European golden boot in 2005 and 2009. Fans of English football remember a different Diego Forlan, one who could and did miss completely open goals.

Errado: Sebastían Abreu, San Lorenzo vs River Plate

Uruguayan striker Sebastián "Loco" Abreu has played for an astonishing 18 teams in 8 different countries during his career as a nomadic international journeyman footballer  In 1996 he joined San Lorenzo for his first stint with the club. During his stay there he logged an impressive 26 goals in 43 league games, it should have been 27 but for this miss against River Plate which caused a wonderful lamentation by the commentator.

Errado: Facundo Parra, Chacarita Juniors vs Argentinos Juniors, Apertura 2009

On 1 November 2009 Chacarita Juniors hosted Argentinos Juniors, the two teams played out an entertaining 2-2 draw but the game will be remembered by Chacarita striker Facundo Parra and the Chacarita fans for this unbelievable miss.

Martín Palermo, 3 penalties

Martín Palermo holds all kinds of goalscoring records for Boca Juniors, however he is probably most famous outside Argentina for getting himself in the Guinness book of records for being the only player to have missed 3 penalties in the same game at international level. He managed this feat in a 3-0 defeat to Colombia in the Copa América 1999.

Pasquinelli miss

In 2007 former Leicester, Livingston and Aberdeen player Fernando Pasquinelli was playing in a 3rd division fixture in Argentina. His side Temperley were 0-1 down to Atlanta when he was presented with an open goal.

Arnaldo Vera miss

On 18 March 2003 Paraguayan side Libertad travelled to Ecuador to face Emelec in a Copa Libertadores group game. They recorded an impressive 1-5 win, but the only trace of the match to be found on Youtube is this incredible miss from Libertad's Arnaldo Vera.

José Carlos Férnandez miss

21 March 2010, Peruvian side Alianza Lima were 0-2 down at home against Universidad César Vallejo when their striker José Carlos Férnandez (supposedly the Peruvian Zlatan Ibrahimovic) got a glorious opportunity to get one back. To call his reaction to the chance hesitant would be an understatement. Alianza lost the game 0-2.
