Pick of the week - 2 November 2010

Colombia

Inthe first game of the weekend leaders Deportes Tolima lost 1-0 away at Independiente Medellín giving the other title challengers a chance to make up ground. Santa Fe in 2nd and Once Caldas in 3rd drew 1-1, putting an end to Once's 5 straight wins. 4th placed Atlético Nacional also missed their chance to make up ground on the leaders after a 0-0 draw with bottom side Deportes Pereira. The only team in the top 5 to win were fifth placed Atlético Huila who recorded a 4-0 win against Boyacá Chicó, they were 2-0 up at half time when the referee awarded them an undeserved penalty only 3 minutes into the 2nd half. Two of their other three goals were very nice.

La Equidad climbed up to 6th place with a 2-0 win against Millonarios, their first goal was well crafted and their second goal came from a route one ball from their goalkeeper and a mad charge out of his goal from the Millonarios keeper.

Paraguay

Libertad extended their lead at the top of the Paraguayan league with a 1-2 away win against Sportivo Trinidense as their closest title challengers Cerro Porteño dropped points for the second game in a row in a 1-1 draw against 5th placed Olimpia in the Superclásico de Paraguay.

Guaraní recorded a 0-1 away win against Nacional to leapfrog them into 3rd place despite playing over an hour of the game with 10 players. At the wrong end of the table 3 de Febrero continued their resurgence with a 0-1 away win against Sol de América.

Uruguay

In midweek Peñarol took over as leaders of the division after winning their game in hand 1-5 away at bottom club Tacuarembó.There were more big wins at the weekend Defensor Sporting Club beat Fénix 5-1 and Nacional came back from 0-1 at half time to hammer River Plate 6-1.

It looks like El Tanque Sisley have come back down to earth after losing 2-0 against Danubio, but they are still in 3rd position and well clear of the relegation fight.

In the last game of the weekend Peñarol had the chance to go three points clear of Defensor at the top but blew their chance going down to a 1-2 home defeat against Liverpool.

Venezuela

In Venezuela Real Esporr are the leaders, six points clear of second place after they won both their games this week, beating Mineros 1-3 on Thursday and then getting a 2-1 win against Monagas on Sunday. their closest rivals Caracas FC had their game postponed so the game in hand has transferred to them and Deportivo Táchira could only join them in joint second after they drew 1-1 away at Zamora despite playing with only 9 players for a large portion of the game.

Chile

In Chile Universidad Cátolica kept their slim championship hopes alive with a 2-1 win against La Serena. Third placed Universidad de Chile slipped up again losing for the fourth time in six games in a 2-0 away defeat against Universidad de Concepción. In the last game of the weekend Colo-Colo gave some hope to 2nd placed Universidad de Cátolica when they could only draw 0-0 with Huachipato.

In the relegation zone both of the teams in the automatic relegation places managed to win, San Luis beat Unión Española 3-1 but they are still 8 points from the relative safety of the relegation playoff position and 2nd bottom side CD Everton managed their first win in 18 league games with a 1-2 away win against Cobresal.

Bolivia

There was only one candidate for the game of the week in Bolivia, the 4-4 draw between current league leaders Bolívar and La Paz FC an entertaining game but not for the quality of the defending.  San José didn't take advantage of the slip up, losing 0-3 at home to Oriente Petrolero who are back in the title race and only 2 points behind the leaders.

Of the other realistic title contenders Blooming chucked away a two nil lead to lose 2-3 at home against Guabirá who were winning their first away game of the year, Real Potosí could only get a 1-1 draw against bottom of the table side Universitario and Aurora slipped further off the pace with a 2-1 away defeat to Real Mamoré.

León Huánuco are the leaders of group B after beating Sport 2-0 in the Huánuco derby. Sport Boys are in 2nd place after a 2-1 win against Juan Aurich.

Ecuador

LDU Quito had the ideal preparation for their Copa Sudamericana quarter final with a 0-4 away win against bottom of the table Independiente, meanwhile their only realistic title challengers Deportivo Cuenca lost 2-3 at home to Olmedo.
