On 11 November 2001 Nueva Chicago hosted Racing Club in the 13th round of Apertura 2001. The game was significant for both teams, Nueva Chicago were embroiled in a desperate fight to avoid relegation and Racing Club were hunting their first league championship in 35 years. The game ended 4-4 and seven weeks later Racing Club won the league championship by a single point from River Plate. Nueva Chicago avoided relegation at the end of the 2001-02 season but since then the club has been in serious decline, they currently play in the regionalised 3rd division.
