On 27 May 2003 Argentine giants River Plate travelled to Colombia to defend their 2-1 first leg lead against América de Cali in the 2nd leg of the Copa Libertadores quarter-final. There was already a lot of history between the two clubs, River Plate won both of their Copa Libertadores titles by beating América in the finals of 1986 and 1996.
The incident started when América coach Fernando Castro needlessly booted the ball away when River Plate had a throw in, then pulled Claudio Hussain's hair sparking off a mass brawl. América won the game 4-1 to go through to the semi final where they were thrashed 6-0 on aggregate by River Plate's fiercest rivals; Boca Juniors.
