Miguel Caneo backheel caño vs Argentinos Juniors, Apertura 2011
On 25 March 2011 Argentinos Juniors (the only unbeaten side) played Quilmes (the only side without a win) in round seven of the Apertura 2011 tournament in Argentina. The game ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw meaning that both sides kept their records. The highlight of the match was this backheel-nutmeg from Miguel Caneo of Quilmes which illustrates that even players from the worst team in the Argentine Primera know a good trick or two.

Match reports
1st round
Argentinos Juniors secured an impressive 2-2 draw against Brazilian champions Fluminense in the first game of the group stages. It was a game of four headers, 5' 4" Franco Niell scored two headers for Argentinos Juniors and Rafael Moura equalised twice also with headers. In the other opening match Club América beat Nacional 2-0 with an early goal in each half.
2nd round
Having started the group with two home games Fluminense will be massively disappointed with their 0-0 draw against Nacional, meaning that they have dropped points in both of them. They will now need to prove that they can play away from home if they want to have any chance of getting out of such a difficult group. Nacional on the other hand can be fairly happy to have taken a point from their opening pair of tough away games, they can look forward to playing three out of their remaining four games in front of their own fans at the Parque Central.
Argentinos Juniors got their first win of the campaign to go top of group 3 with a 3-1 win against Club América. They did it the hard way falling behind to an unmarked header from América's Argentine midfielder Rolfi Montenegro. Argentinos came back with two goals from Santiago Salcedo either side of half time before Cristián Sánchez Prette scored with a 94th minute drive, yet another stunning late goal in this year's competition.
3rd round
Argentinos Juniors secured a vital 0-1 away win against Nacional to secure their place at the top of the group after three games. Franco Niell was the goalscoring hero for the Argentine side but his opportunity was gifted to him by a calamitous misunderstanding between Nacional's goalkeeper Leonardo Burián and their Brazilian defender Gabriel Marques.
In the other game Club América recovered from their mauling by Argentinos Juniors last week to record a 1-0 win against Fluminense with Argentine midfielder 'Rolfi' Montenegro winning himself the time and space to pick out the perfect pass for Daniel Marquez to score.
4th round
Argentinos Juniors were rocked by a shock 0-1 home defeat to Nacional, a team they convincingly beat in Uruguay two weeks ago. Santiago García scored the goal after easily stripping defender Santiago Gentiletti of posession, the 20 year old striker made a nuicance of himself for the whole game and was selected by many as the man of the match. Argentinos laboured to get back into the game but Nacional often looked the more likely to score on the counter attack. This result ended Argentinos Juniors eight game unbeaten start to 2011 and opened the group wide for any of the teams to qualify.
The following week saw the return match between Fluminense and América. In a game featuring a lot of shambolic defending from both sides the Brazilians twice came from behind before second half substitute Deco hit the winner in the 87th minute.
5th round
Nacional kept alive their hopes of making it to the knockout phase with a 2-0 win against Brazilian champions Fluminense meaning that if they win their final home game against Club América they are certain to qualify. Santiago García was the hero with both of the goals.
Argentinos Juniors lost 2-1 in Mexico against Club América who jumped to the top of the group. The result meant that any two of the four teams could still qualify and left Argentinos needing a win against Fluminense in their last game to ensure qualification. Franco Niell put the Argentine visitors ahead early in the second half with a near post header from a corner but their advantage was overturned with goals from second half substitutes Vicente Vuoso and Daniel Márquez.
6th round
In the final round of games Fluminense recorded an impressive 2-4 away win against Argentinos Juniors to secure their place in the knockout stages. Nacional missed out by the narrowest of margins after they could only manage a 0-0 draw against Club América.
Argentinos will be hugely disappointed to have missed out on qualification given that a single pointfrom any of their last three games would have been enough to qualify given their impressive start to the group stage. They never looked comfortable in the game against Fluminense coming back from a goal behind twice, but could not find another goal after their goalkeeper Nicolás Navarro gifted Rafael Moura an easy goal. Fred scored a fourth from the penalty spot late in the game to secure the points.

Golazo: Cristian Sánchez Prette vs Club América, Copa Libertadores 2011
On 24 February 2011 1985 Copa Libertadores champions Argentinos Juniors faced Mexican side Club América in group 3 of the 2011 Copa Libertadores. They had already come back from a goal behind to lead 2-1 thanks to a couple of goals from Santiago Salcedo when Cristian Sánchez Prette sealed them a vital 3-1 win with this 93rd minute strike.
The Mexican opposition are clearly resigned to defeat, witness the way the full back completely pulls out of the challenge and the freedom that Argentinos are allowed in posession for the rest of the move. Even though it stemmed from a long ball and América should have pressurised Argentinos more, the goal was still a nice finish to conclude some neat buildup play.
Golazo: Franco Niell Olimpo vs Argentinos Juniors, Apertura 2010
Both Olimpo and Argentinos Juniors had dismal starts to the Primera División Apertura 2010 tournament. The reigning champions failed to win any of their first nine games and Olimpo found themselves in the automatic relegation place and miles from safety after a six game losing streak.
Both teams began to recover in October and by their encounter on 22 November they had the best recent form of all the teams outside the top 7 places. Olimpo dominated the game until this "chilena" from Argentinos Juniors striker Franco Niell earned the champions a point.
What ever happened to? Iván Kaviedes
![]() |
Kaviedes at Crystal palace in 2004. |
By this point Kaviedes was already an international journeyman footballer having played professional football in Ecuador (Emelec, Deportivo Quito & Barcelona SC), Italy (Perugia), Spain (Celta Vigo & Valladolid), Mexico (Puebla) and Portugal (FC Porto) with varying degrees of success. At the time he was a regular first team player for the Ecuador national team and a very popular player in his homeland having scored the goal that secured Ecuador's first ever qualification for the World Cup in a 1-1 draw with Uruguay in November 2001.
He was highly regarded as a finisher, he scored 43 goals in one season for his first club Emelec, the goal of the season for 2000-01 in Spain with a bicycle kick against Barcelona for Valladolid and this excellent finish for Mexican side Puebla. Another notable moment in his career was this dribble and pass to set up Agustín Delgado's goal in a famous 1-0 win against Brazil in 2001.
Upon his arrival in south London manager Ian Dowie said "He is an icon in Ecuadorian football and an outstanding footballer. He's come on trial and shown good motivation in training, he's a breath of fresh air, a great finisher and a free-kick specialist."
Despite Dowie's positive words Kaviedes barely featured for Palace despite the fact that they were embroiled in a relegation battle and struggling to score goals. He made six competitive appearances for the club, he made his debut in a 1-3 defeat against Everton. His only start came in a game against Chelsea and the remaining four appearances all came as a second half substitute. It can be argued that he was unfortunate that Dowie stuck to a 4-5-1 formation and team mate Andy Johnson hit a rich vein of form, scoring 21 goals in the season and making himself virtually undroppable. In January 2005 he was allowed to leave the club after his contract was terminated by mutual consent, despite all of Johnson's goals Palace were relegated at the end of the season.

Kaviedes spiderman celebration at the 2006 World Cup. |
Later that year he joined Argentine Primera División side Argentinos Juniors where he played with limited success, but he was still selected for the 2006 World Cup squad. He famously put on a spiderman mask after scoring against Costa Rica in the World Cup as a tribute to former team mate Otilino "Spiderman" Tenorio who had died in a car crash in 2005.
After the World Cup he had another brief stint with Barcelona Sporting Club and in 2007 he joined El Nacional where he scored 14 goals in 34 league appearances. This stint was the last time that he managed to finish a season without being sacked by his club.
His last cap for Ecuador came in November 2007 in a 5-1 win against Peru in a World Cup qualifier. He made a total of 53 appearances for his country scoring 16 goals, making him Ecuador's joint 4th highest goal scorer behind Agustín Delgado, Eduardo Hurtado and Alex Aguinaga.
In 2008 he joined Liga de Quito but after only two games he quit the club after a disagreement about a debt he said wasn't his. In 2009 he spent time in a drugs rehabilitation clinic and after recovering he trained with LDU Portoviejo but was not ever officially part of their squad.
After two years out of the game he returned to action for Macará in 2010, but once again he was sacked. The official reason was that he kept missing training and had other disciplinary issues. The manager of the club said that Iván always said that he wishes people would listen to him, but lots of people did listen to him and when they said things that he didn't want to hear he got angry with them.
This version of events is disputed on his official website which claims that he was forced out of the club against the manager's wishes by a group of players that have influence with the directors.
Whatever the case, it is clear that Kaviedes' career has been in serious decline since the 2006 World Cup. He is still remarkably popular amongst Ecuadorians, which is unsurprising given the flair with which he used to score goals and his place in the history of Ecuadorian football is safe thanks to his goal to earn Ecuador their first ever World Cup appearance.
It is hard to say why he failed at Crystal Palace since he was barely given an opportunity to play for the club, but like Southampton flop and international strike partner Agustín Delgado it is clear from his achievements before and after his short spell in English football that he was a quality player.

Biography: José Yudica
José Yudica is a former Argentine football manager who was the first manager ever to win the Primera División with three different clubs. What is even more impressive is the fact that none of the teams he turned into championship winners were from the traditional big five.
Yudica was born in Rosario on 7 December 1936, he made his debut for his local team; Newell's Old Boys at the age of 17. He enjoyed a 16 year playing career with the likes of Boca Juniors, Vélez Sársfield, Estudiantes de La Plata, Quilmes and Platense, he also played four games for the Argentina national team. Yudica won his only silverware as a player with Colombian side Deportivo Cali in the late 1960s before returning to Argentina to play for 2nd division side San Telmo where he ended his playing career.
Yudica's first great success as a manager came in 1978 when he led Buenos Aires minnows Quilmes to their first and only championship; the Metropolitano 1978 only 3 years after they had been promoted from the 2nd level. In 1980 Yudica left Quilmes to take over at Estudiantes de La Plata, in his absence Quilmes struggled and were relegated to the 2nd division only 2 seasons after winning the Metropolitano championship.
Yudica returned to Quilmes in 1981 and secured their promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt with a 2nd place finish. Instead of continuing with Quilmes in the Primera División he was persuaded to take over at San Lorenzo who had been relegated from the Primera for the first time in their history the previous season. Yudica led them back to the Primera División as champions at the first attempt. He remained in charge of the club until 1985 when he took over at first time champions Argentinos Juniors after their previous manager Roberto Saporiti had left to take over at Colombian side Atlético Junior.
Yudica kept faith with most of Saporiti's championship winning players and helped them to win their 2nd consecutive league championship before leading them to triumph in the Copa Libertadores in 1985, beating América de Cali in the final. Argentinos Juniors became only the 2nd club to win South America's premier club competition at the first attempt after Brazilian side Flamengo in 1981.
Yudica also led Argentinos Juniors to victory in the now defunct Copa Interamericana in 1986 and a defeat on penalties after a 2-2 draw against Juventus in the 1985 Intercontinental Cup.
In 1987 Yudica returned to his boyhood club Newell's Old Boys as their manager and led them to the Primera Division championship in the 1987-88 season making him the first manager to win the Argentine league with three separate teams, the only other manager to achieve this feat since then is Américo Gallego who did it with River Plate, Independiente and Newell's Old Boys.
In 1990 Yudica took over at Colombian side Deportivo Cali before returning to Argentinos Juniors in 1992 where he had an infamous confrontation with the Barras Bravas (ultras) who accosted him after a practice session about why the team were performing badly in the league. He replied "I am the manager and you belong in the stands". This did not go down well and the irate fans attacked his son, who was his assistant kicking and punching him. Yudica eventually broke up the confrontation by firing a gun in the air, he immediately resigned as manager and severed all connections with the club where he had achieved some of his greatest managerial triumphs, having led them to national and international glory.
Yudica had a stint in charge of another of his former clubs in 1993 when he was manager of Platense and he returned as manager of Newell's once again in 1995. He won yet another league championship in 1996, but this time in Mexico with Pachuca. His last managerial appointment was back at Quilmes in 1997. He has not worked as a manager since then and has spoken of how he felt that he had been frozen out of the game. He is now an old man and a virtually forgotten figure in Argentine football, which is a real shame because in terms of managerial achievement he is the Brian Clough of Argentine football.

What ever happened to? Nicolás Medina
![]() |
A rare sight, Medina in Sunderland colours. |
In 2000 Sunderland signed a 19 year old player for £3.5 million from Argentinos Juniors, a club renowned for producing quality players like Diego Maradona, Sergio Batista, Claudio Borghi, Fernando Redondo and Juan Román Riquelme.
The player soon worked his way into the Sunderland first team, eventually making 177 appearances for the club and scoring 23 goals. This player was of course Julio Arca and his signing was such a success that Peter Reid could not resist splashing out another £3.5 million on another Argentinos Juniors player the following summer describing the latest signing as "the complete midfield player".
The second player was Nicolás Medina, who had starred alongside Arca in the Argentina U-21 team that had just won the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship. Medina did not find himself thrown into the first team like Arca had been, in fact he hadn't even made his debut for the black cats by December 2002 when he received a surprise call up to a Argentina national team training camp.
Peter Reid had never given any satisfactory reason for why such an expensive signing was not getting the slightest chance to play for the club, and his successor, Howard Wilkinson was no better, giving the bizarre explanation that "The evidence suggests that Nicolas hasn't got it because the previous manager didn't pick him".
Medina had made only a single appearance for the club, in a FA Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers. By the summer of 2003, the management had lost faith with the player and he was farmed out on loan to Spanish 2nd division side CD Leganés for the 2003-04 season at the end of which Leganés were relegated to the regionalised 3rd division.
Medina was then called up by Argentina manager Marcelo Bielsa for the 2004 Summer Olympics, where he played in 3 of Argentina's games alongside players such as Javier Mascherano, Carlos Tevez, Javier Saviola, and Andrés D'Allesandro. Argentina beat Paraguay 1-0 in the final and Medina collected his Olympic Gold medal to go in his collection alongside his World U-21 medal.
Later that summer he was included in the Argentina squad for the Copa América 2004 along with recent Birmingham City reject Luciano Figueroa. Medina didn't play for the team during the tournament, but he didn't have long to wait until his full international debut.
On 4 September 2004 Medina was called up to the Argentina national team where he played in a 3-1 win over Peru in Lima. Highlighting an absurd situation where a player could supposedly be good enough to play for the Argentina national team, yet so bad that he failed to get a single league game for Sunderland in 3 seasons, despite the fact that they had spent the majority of that time embroiled in relegation dogfights. This single appearance for the Argentina national team was undoubtedly the high water mark of his career.
Sunderland finally got him off their books, releasing him on a free transfer to Real Murcia of the Spanish 2nd division, and in so doing made him the most expensive signing not to have played a single league game for the club.
After one season with Murcia he returned to Argentina, where joined Primera División side Rosario Central in 2005. He only made 3 first team appearances for Central before joining Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata in 2006. Gimnasia loaned him out to a succession of clubs including Nueva Chicago where he only made a single appearance, and Talleres de Córdoba of the Argentine 2nd division. In 2007 he rejoined Gimnasia where he only played in 7 of their games during the entire 2007-08 season.
In 2009 he joined Chilean side O'Higgins, but failed to settle there, returning to Argentina in 2010 to play for 2nd division side Tiro Federal. In the summer of 2010 he was released by Tiro Federal and is now a 28 year old free agent.
In 2009 he joined Chilean side O'Higgins, but failed to settle there, returning to Argentina in 2010 to play for 2nd division side Tiro Federal. In the summer of 2010 he was released by Tiro Federal and is now a 28 year old free agent.
Medina will not be remembered for his playing abilities by Sunderland fans, except those die hard supporters that saw him play in that FA Cup game or turned out to watch the reserves between 2001 and 2003. He is remembered as a remarkable waste of money and a player who utterly failed to live up to expectations.
Looking back through the Argentina squad lists for the 2001 U-21 World Cup and the Olympic squad of 2004 there are understandably several players who's careers never reached the heights achieved by Tevez, Mascherano and Saviola, yet none have experienced a career nosedive as spectacular as that of Nicolás Medina.

Partidazo: River Plate 5-4 Argentinos Juniors, 1985-86
26 January 1986, River Plate faced reigning Argentine and South American champions Argentinos Juniors at the Estadio Monumental. In a spectacular game.
The first half belonged to the hosts as River Plate established a 3-0 lead at half time with goals from Luis Amuchástegui, a great goal from Enzo Francescoli and another from Luis Enrique.
In the second half Argentinos then pulled it back to 3-2 with a penalty from Mario Videla and a fantastic diving header from Carlos Ereros. River Plate regained their two goal advantage when they were awarded a hotly contested fourth goal which did seem to cross the line despite the heroic effort of Argentinos goalkeeper Enrique Vidallé. River were then denied a 5th goal on the counter attack by a lung busting run from current Argentina manager Sergio Batista.
Argentinos made it 4-3 after River Plate goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea fumbled Videla's header into the net. Amuchástegui came within inches of registering his hat-trick but his lob bounced agonisingly over the crossbar before Fracescoli scored his second and River's 5th of the game. There was still time for Videla to claim his hat-trick with a second penalty but River Plate held on to claim a famous 5-4 victory.
Aftermath
River Plate won the 1985-86 championship by a huge margain of 10 points (back in the 2 points for a win era). Having taken Argentinos league title, River eliminated them from the Copa Libertadores in the semi final group stage, before going on to win the Libertadores for the first time in their history beating América de Cali in the final. River Plate enjoyed the next decade, winning numerous league championships while their fierce rivals Boca Juniors endured the longest dry spell in their history.
Argentinos Juniors fared less well, they went from being league and continental champions in 1985 to playing in the 2nd division by 1995. They eventually re-established themselves in the top flight and eventually ended their 25 year wait for another league title by winning the Clausura 2010 championship under manager Claudio Borghi who had played for Argentinos Juniors in their multi championship winning team and in this incredible game.

Errado: Facundo Parra, Chacarita Juniors vs Argentinos Juniors, Apertura 2009
On 1 November 2009 Chacarita Juniors hosted Argentinos Juniors, the two teams played out an entertaining 2-2 draw but the game will be remembered by Chacarita striker Facundo Parra and the Chacarita fans for this unbelievable miss.

Partidazo: Argentinos Juniors 4-3 Independiente, Clausura 2010 - Comback of champions
9 May 2010. In the 18th and penumtimate fecha of the Clausura 2010 season Argentinos Juniors hosted Independiente in a championship showdown. Both teams needed the win in order to have any chance to overtake championship leaders and favourites Estudiantes de La Plata.
Estudiantes led the championship race by one point from Argentinos with Independiente 5 points behind.
Argentinos got off to a good start with a 26th minute goal from Nicolás Pavlovich but within 2 minutes former Argentinos Juniors player Leonel Núñez equalised with an olympic goal (straight from the corner kick) he refused to celebrate making apologetic gestures to the Argentinos fans.
With the score tied 1-1 at half time and both sides in desperate need of the win it seemed that 2nd half goals would be inevitable, and there turned out to be 5 of them.
Independiente started the 2nd half strongly going 1-2 ahead on 48 minutes and then Núñez scored his second and seemingly decisive goal for 1-3 on 67 minutes, again making apologetic gestures to the Argentinos faithful.
Pavlovich scored his second of the game on 73 minutes with a well taken header to give Argentinos some hope. With exactly one minute of normal time left Juan Sabia scored after a goalmouth scramble, then after 3 of the 4 additional minutes had been played José Luis Calderón set up Matías Caruzzo to score the winning goal.
Estudientes drew their home game 0-0 against relegation battlers Rosario Central, to give Argentinos a 1 point advantage going into the last game of the season. Argentinos travelled to Huracán where they were crowned champions for the first time in 25 years after a 1-2 win.
