Golazo: Mauro Formica vs Gimnasia La Plata, Clausura 2010

On the last day of the January 2011 transfer window English side Blackburn Rovers signed little known 22 year old Argentine midfielder Mauro Formica from Newell's Old Boys for a fee of £3.5 million.

Formica has scored 20 goals for Newell's in 83 appearances since making his debut for the club at the age of 18 back in September 2006. On his day he looked like a great player although claims that he is the "new Maradona" are miles off the mark. One of his best performances came in this 6-0 demolition of Gimnasia de La Plata at the back end of the Clausura 2010 tournament in which he scored two goals including this spectacular finish.

Formica has a lot of confidence and potential so Blackburn fans should be pleased with the aquisition at such a modest price, however if he is not allowed a regular run in the first team to establish himself he may well become one of the legion of South American players to leave the Premier League without much success.

Golazo: James Rodríguez, Banfield vs Lanús, Clausura 2010

On 15 February 2010 the Argentine champions Banfield hosted Lanús (the other team to have won their first Argentine championship in the last few years). The 2nd goal of the game was this classy finish from 18 year old Colombian winger James Rodríguez, who also played a part in the buildup with a caño (nutmeg) and a taco (back-heel).

Banfield couldn't retain their championship, nobody has since Boca Juniors in 2005-06 and Rodríguaz was predictably snapped up by one of the European clubs. In this case FC Porto, where he is currently rotting in the reserves.

Golazo: Marcos Pérez, GIMNASIA LP 1-0 Boca Juniors, Clausura 2010 - The double bicycle kick (Chilena doble)

18 April 2010, Colombian teenager Marco Pérez scores the winning goal for Argentine side Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata in a 1-0 win against Boca Juniors with a great overhead kick that became known as the "chilena doble".

Partidazo: Argentinos Juniors 4-3 Independiente, Clausura 2010 - Comback of champions

9 May 2010. In the 18th and penumtimate fecha of the Clausura 2010 season Argentinos Juniors hosted Independiente in a championship showdown. Both teams needed the win in order to have any chance to overtake championship leaders and favourites Estudiantes de La Plata.

Estudiantes led the championship race by one point from Argentinos with Independiente 5 points behind.

Argentinos got off to a good start with a 26th minute goal from Nicolás Pavlovich but within 2 minutes former Argentinos Juniors player Leonel Núñez equalised with an olympic goal (straight from the corner kick) he refused to celebrate making apologetic gestures to the Argentinos fans.

With the score tied 1-1 at half time and both sides in desperate need of the win it seemed that 2nd half goals would be inevitable, and there turned out to be 5 of them.

Independiente started the 2nd half strongly going 1-2 ahead on 48 minutes and then Núñez scored his second and seemingly decisive goal for 1-3 on 67 minutes, again making apologetic gestures to the Argentinos faithful.

Pavlovich scored his second of the game on 73 minutes with a well taken header to give Argentinos some hope. With exactly one minute of normal time left Juan Sabia scored after a goalmouth scramble, then after 3 of the 4 additional minutes had been played José Luis Calderón set up Matías Caruzzo to score the winning goal.

Estudientes drew their home game 0-0 against relegation battlers Rosario Central, to give Argentinos a 1 point advantage going into the last game of the season. Argentinos travelled to Huracán where they were crowned champions for the first time in 25 years after a 1-2 win.
