Neymar back heel fail.
In the 18th round of the Brasileirão 2010 Santos' latest 18 year old wonderkid Neymar took the opportunity to do some showboating in a game against Avaí, His attempted back-heel didn't exactly come off, but to be fair to the kid it normally does.

Fluminense manager Muricy Ramalho celebrates his fourth Brasileirão championship as a coach after leading Fluminense to their first league title since 1984. |
Cruzeiro did all they could, coming back from a goal down to beat Palmeiras 2-1 with an injury time winner in their final match, but they knew that they were relying on Guaraní to pull off a shock result that didn't happen and for Corinthians to drop points too. Corinthians did drop points in a 1-1 draw against relegated Goiás who were probably preoccupied with their midweek trip to Avellaneda to face Independiente in the 2nd leg of the 2010 Copa Sudamerica final but they claimed a draw thanks to a dreadful goalkeeping error from Corinthians' previously exceptional shot stopper Júlio César. Cruzeiro leapfrogged Corinthians into second place, finishing two points behind the champions.
Grêmio secured fourth place and the last Copa Libertadores qualification place with a thumping 3-0 win against their only rivals for the spot; Botafogo. They will be joined in the continent's premier club competition by the top three (Fluminense, Cruzeiro and Corinthians) the Copa Libertadores holders Internacional and Copa Brazil 2010 champions Santos.
The relegation battle also threw up a head-to-head encounter between the two relegation candidates, Vitória failed to capitalise on their home advantage, only earning a 0-0 draw with Atlético Goianiense who survived by the narrowest of margins.
The only team in the bottom half of the table to actually win were Vasco da Gama who beat Ceará to leapfrog them into 11th position.
Internacional finished off a brilliant year for the club with a 0-3 away win against bottom of the table and Serie B bound Grêmio Prudente. The reason the home team have been relegated was apparent in this game, both of Internacionals opening goals were headed in by completely unmarked players. Internacional's third goal was a cracking volley from Guiliano.
The three teams that ensured their survival last weekend all relaxed, Flamengo played out a tepid 0-0 draw with Santos, Atlético Mineiro were hammered 4-0 by São Paulo and Avaí also let their three game winning streak go with a 1-0 away defeat to Atlético Paranaense.

What a mistake from Leandro Euzébio, what a way to capitalise by Dinei.
In the 37th and penultimate fixture of the 2010 Brasileirão leaders Fluminense faced a trip to Palmeiras. They needed a win in order to stay at the top of the table going into the last round of fixtures but they conceded after only 4 minutes after this dreadful mistake from Leandro Euzébio, which was capitalised upon in brilliant style by Dinei. Fluminense fought back andeventually won the game 2-1.
Highlights: Brasileirão Série A 2010 - round 37
In the penultimate round of the Brazilian championship all three of the top teams managed to win meaning that any of them could win the championship next weekend. Leaders Fluminense managed a 1-2 away win against Palmeiras, coming from a goal down after a dreadful defensive error by Leandro Euzébio followed by a brilliant curling shot from Dinei. 2nd placed Corinthians won 2-0 at home against Vasco da Gama and 3rd placed Cruzeiro also came back from one goal down to win 1-2 away at Flamengo.
In the relegation struggle long time occupants of the relegation zone Atlético Mineiro secured their safety with a 3-1 win against relegated Goiás, a third consecutive win for the home team. Avaí also recorded their third consecutive win to ensure their safety, coming from two goals down to beat Santos 3-2 with a hat-trick from Caio. They move two points clear of the drop zone which is enough to secure their safety since the two teams below them play each other on the last day.
Guaraní were relegated after a 0-3 home capitulation against Grêmio, who still lead the chase for the last Copa Libertadores berth. Vitória occupy the last remaining relegation place although a 1-1 away draw against continental champions Internacional should not be scoffed at, they are behind Atlético Goianiense who drew 1-1 with São Paulo with yet another goal for Rogerio Ceni, São Paulo's world record highest scoring goalkeeper.
Atlético Goianiense and Vitoria are level on points and goal difference, only separated by goals scored the last round of fixtures will determine which of three teams will win the title and which of these two teams will suffer relegation to Serie B.
Grêmio are in the last remaining Copa Libertadores spot on 60 points, however Botafogo kept their hopes of pinching it on the last day of the season alive with a 3-1 win against bottom of the table Grêmio Prudente. Outsiders Atlético Paranaense are out of the race after they could only manage a 1-1 draw away at Ceará.

Cosas locas: Richarlyson red card vs Fluminense, Brasileirão 2010
On 21 November 2010 Fluminense faced a tough trip to face São Paulo in the 36th round of the Brasileirão 2010 championship. They had a chance to go back to the top of the table with only two games of the season remaining with a win.
Fluminense established a lead but São Paulo levelled the scores with a lovely goal from Lucas Gaúcho. At this point Fluminense were struggling however the game changed when the referee sent off two of São Paulo's players in a seven minute spell. The first did seem to be a professional foul however after Fluminense won the title their criticspointed to this 2nd red card as a definitive moment in their championship.
Fluminense managed to score 3 goals against the 9 man side and give themselves a 1-4 win and establish a one point advantage with 2 games remaining.

The star of the weekend was Santos' 19 year old wonder kid Neymar, who bagged a 7 minute hat-trick to relegate Goiás. |
2nd placed Fluminense faced a tough trip to São Paulo and after the home team equalised in the 55th minute things were looking tough for Fluminense, however 2 red cards for the home team and three goals for the away team including 2 from Argentine striker Darío Conca gave Fluminense a 1-4 win and a one point lead at the top of the table. After a lot of complaining from Fluminense about Ronaldo's soft penalty for Corinthians last week, critics of the club will surely point to São Paulo's 2nd red card in this game should they go on to win the championship in two weeks time.
3rd placed Cruzeiro knew that their title hopes would almost certainly vanish without a home win against Vasco da Gama and they managed a 3-1 victory to leave them 2 points off the pace in 3rd position with two games of the season remaining.
In the fight for the last Copa Libertadores qualification position Grêmio leapfrogged Atlético Paranaense into 4th place after beating them 3-1 on Saturday. Botafogo would have been able to take it back with a home win against Internacional but they lost 1-2.
On Saturday Guaraní lost 2-1 away at Flamengo and now only have two remaining games against top 4 sides Grêmio and Fluminense in which to save themselves from relegation. The highlight of the game was a brilliant long range free kick from former Guaraní midfielder Renato Abreu after only 2 minutes.
Atlético Miniero continued their run of good form with a 0-2 away win against Palmeiras to lift themselves well clear of the drop zone and put themselves in with a good chance of qualifying to play in next year's Copa Sudamericana. This is because Brazil get an absurd 8 places in the Copa, meaning that of the 16 teams that remain in the division at the end of the season, 14 of them will qualify for international tournaments. Avaí also built on the momentum of their 2-3 win against Internacional last week with a comprehensive 3-0 victory in their must win tie against 14th placed Atlético Goianiense, moving them out of the relegation zone at the expanse of Vitória.
Grêmio Prudente are already relegated but they still managed a 1-1 draw against Ceará to keep alive their hopes of avoiding a bottom of the table finish. Goiás knew that they would be relegated if they failed to beat Santos and after 11 minutes they had the lead and things were looking good against a team who were without a win in six games, however they conceded the equaliser only 8 minutes later. Late in the 2nd half Santos' wonder kid Neymar hit a 7 minute hat-trick to earn a 1-4 victory for his team and seal the relegation of Goiás in their own stadium.

Neymar 7 minute hat-trick vs Goiás, Brasileirão 2010
On 21 November Brazilian side Goiás faced a must win game against Santos in the 36th round of the Brasileirão 2010, without a win they were certain to be relegated. After 11 minutes things were looking good for the home team, they had established a 1-0 lead and looked like extending Santos' run of 6 games without a win.
Danilo equalised for Santos after 19 minutes but Goiás still had a chance of saving themselves until the referee awarded Santos a penalty. Brazil's latest wonder kid 18 year old Neymar scored it on 75 minutes and by the 82nd minute he had completed his hat-trick to make the score 1-4 and Goias were relegated to Serie B.
Golazo: Renato Abreu vs Guaraní, Brasileirão 2010
On 20 November 2010 Guaraní faced a tough trip to Rio de Janeiro to face Flamengo in the 36th round of the Brasileirão 2010 championship. They desperately needed the 3 points in their battle to avoid relegation, however they ended up losing the game 2-1 in which former Guaraní midfielder Renato Abreu scored this magnificent free kick for Flamengo only 2 minutes into the game to add to his collection of brilliant free kick goals for the club.
Game of the week: 17 November 2010 - Internacional 2-3 Avaí
On 14 November 2010 Brazilian side Avaí faced a tough away trip to play Copa Libertadores holders Internacional. They had just been eliminated from the quarter finals of Copa Sudamericana 2010 and needed to focus on escaping from the relegation zone with only 4 games of the league season remaining. They could not have started the game in a better way than scoring the fastest goal of the season after only 16 seconds with this marvelous team goal finished off by Patric. The away team eventually won 2-3 to give themselves a fighting chance of avoiding relegation.
Avaí went 2-0 ahead with another well crafted goal featuring a back-heel in the build up play before the reigning South American champions fought back to 2-2 with two goals in 5 minutes, the first from Leandro Damião and then another goal featuring a back-heel in the build up to set up a magnificent strike from Rafael Sóbis to level the scores.
The away side did not give up and within 4 minutes they had re-established their lead with a header from Robinho (no not that Robinho, he plays for AC Milan). They held onto their advantage until the end of the game to claim a vital 3 points. They are still 2 points away from safety with only 3 games remaining but without this win they would be in a much more desperate position.

Ronaldo scored the winning goal against Cruzeiro. |
On Sunday Fluminense dropped 2 points against Goiás in a 1-1 draw to leave Corinthians as the stand alone leaders. Despite getting a good away point against one of the best teams in the division Goiás are in serious truble 7 points from safety with only 3 games remaining. The reason that they are in so much trouble is that the 4 teams above them all got points too.
Atlético Mineiro got over their elimination from Copa Sudamericana in midweek to hammer Flamengo 4-1 and jump clear of the relegation zone. Flamengo are now without a win in five games and in real danger of getting dragged into the relegation fight. Avaí are still in the relegation zone but a 2-3 away win against Internacional has kept them within 2 points of the safety line. Vitória and Guaraní drew 1-1, a result that keeps them both embroiled in the relegation battle. Atlético Goianiense also moved away from the drop zone with an impressive 3-0 win against Palmeiras.
The first game of the 35th round actually took place on Wednesday night in front of a virtually empty stadium in Fortaleza. The Ceará fans that didn't bother to show up missed a quality game of football featuring an absolute bombaso of a goal from Geraldo for the home team and two more goals for Uruguayan international journeyman striker Sebastián Abreu for Botafogo in a 2-2 draw. Botofogo dropped 2 points in the chase for the last Copa Libertadores spot but two of their rivals also dropped points after Santos and Grêmio could only manage a 0-0 draw. On Sunday Atlético Paranaense moved into the last Copa Libertadores position with a 2-1 win against Grêmio Prudente who are the first team to be officially relegated.
The only remaining game was a 1-1 draw between mid table sides Vasco da Gama and São Paulo. neither side really has anything to play for and the game ended 1-1.

Ex-Middlesbrough player fabio Rochemback celebrates his goal against Ceará. |
Grêmio made absolutely sure of their qualification for next years Copa Sudamericana and kept themselves in the fight for the last Copa Libertadores place with a convincing 5-1 win against Ceará. The visitors were already 2-0 down when Helenio got himself sent off for two yellow cards in the space of 2 minutes after 33 minutes of the game. Ex-Middlesbrough player Fabio Rochemback scored the free kick to make it 3-0, the 4th goal from Douglas was also a free kick.
In the game between Atlético Goianeinse and Internacional, the away side did well to recover from conceding early after this dreadful mix up between Bolívar and goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri and then going 2-0 down after only 22 minutes. Internacional recovered with 2nd half goals from Leandro Damião and a Guiliano to earn a 2-2 draw.
On Sunday the three teams at the top of the table all managed to win, Corinthians took an impressive 0-2 away win against São Paulo in the São Paulo derby, Cruzeiro also won away from home beating Vitória 0-1 and in the last game of the day Fluminense beat Vasco da Gama 1-0 to reestablish their one point lead over the other two teams.
In mid table Atlético Paranaense pulled off a surprise 0-1 away win against Flamengo.
Bottom of the table Grêmio Prudente came back from 0-1 against second bottom side Goiás to win the game 4-1, they would still need to win all of their four remaining games to have a chance of staying in the division but this result helped to keep their slim survival hopes alive for another game at least. Avaí could not climb out of the relegation zone after a 0-0 draw with 4th placed Botafogo and Guaraní stayed in the drop zone after a 0-1 defeat to Palmeiras.

The Corinthians players celebrate during their 4-0 win. |
Corinthians closed to within one point of the top with a convincing win over relegation strugglers Avaí in a game featuring a brilliant long range strike from Bruno Cesár to open the scoring and two late goals from Ronaldo.
The leading pair both dropped points, Fluminense will not be too disappointed with the point that put them top of the table after a 0-0 draw away at Internacional but Cruzeiro will be devastated to have missed their opportunity by losing 0-2 at home against São Paulo.
4th placed Botafogo strengthened their grip on the 4th Copa Libertadores qualification spot with a 3-2 win over bottom of the table Atlético Goianiense who now look certain to be relegated as they are 12 points from safety with only 15 points available, meaning that they would need to win all five of their remaining games to have a chance of survival.
Goiás also failed to improve their position, losing 0-2 at home to Grêmio, and the clubs on either side of the safety line in 16th and 17th, Guaraní and Atlético Mineiro played out a 0-0 draw.
The only team in the bottom half of the table to record a win were Vasco da Gama who recovered from 0-1 down to beat Grêmio Prudente 2-1.
Vitória did well to earn a 1-1 draw away at Santos, who have now fallen away from the championship chase after going four games without a win.

Edno and Sebastián Abreu had a great game against Atlético Mineiro bagging a goal each. |
Fluminense put their title challenge back on track with a 2-0 win against Grêmio on Friday, with two massively contrasting goals from Argentine striker Darío Conca, the first an wonderful control and long range strike, the second the easiest tap in of his career. This win ended their streak of 5 games without a win and lifted them to the top of the table.
There was another wonderful long range strike for a championship chasing side in Cruzeiro's 0-2 away win at bottom of the table Grêmio Prudente. Léo opened the scoring with a magnificent strike to help his team join Fluminense on 57 points, 3 clear of Corinthians and 6 clear of 4th placed Botafogo who kept up their title chase with a 0-2 away win against Atlético Mineiro. Botafogo's Uruguayan international journeyman footballer Sebastián Abreu having a great game with an assist and a lovely goal.
There were two vital wins for teams in the drop zone, Vitória clambered out of the relegation places with a 4-2 win against mid table Vasco da Gama and Avaí improved their survival chances by dragging Guaraní back into the relegation fight with a 1-0 win and closing to within 2 points of their vanquished opponents who occupy the last of the safe positions in 16th place.
Goiás may be contesting the quarter finals of the Copa Sudamericana, but after losing 3-2 to Palmeiras, they are deep in relegation trouble. The game had an incredible finale featuring 4 goals in the last 10 minutes.
Atlético Goianiense continued their run of good form with a 1-1 draw against Ceará, leaving them 2 points clear of the relegation zone and with 4 games without defeat they have the 3rd longest unbeaten streak in the league behind opponents Ceará who are now 9 games unbeaten and Flamengo who have avoided defeat for 7 straight games.
As Internacional and Santos lined up against each other, both teams knew that the winners would have kept themselves in the title chase, but as it turned out a 1-1 draw was not really good enough for either, leaving the teams tied on points in 6th and 5th positions 8 points behind the leaders with only 6 games left. Zé Eduardo scored a brilliant goal for Santos in the 78th minute but only 3 minutes later Leandro Damião equalised for the home team with a completely free header.
São Paulo are pretty much out of the title race, 10 points behind the leaders but they will be looking to nick one of the Copa Libertadores places and coming back from 0-1 down to a controversial opening goal for the visitors to win 2-1 against Atlético Paranaense will help their case. This was their 4th win in 5 games making them the form team in the league with 12 points from the last 15.

Game of the week: 27 October 2010 Cruzeiro 3-4 Atlético Mineiro.
This weeks game of the week is Brazil's Mineiro derby from Sunday. The home team Cruzeiro had the chance to take the lead in the Brazilian championship with a win against their local rivals Atlético Mineiro who were in the relegation zone.
However the home side found themselves 0-3 down after half an hour thanks to a hat-trick from Atletico striker Obina and eventually lost the game 3-4.
This surprise result lifted Atlético out of the relegation zone, made them the form team in the league with 12 points from their last 5 games and prevented their local rivals from going to the top of the table.

Obima scored a 1st half hat-trick as Atlético Mineiro won 3-4 to dent the title aspirations of local rivals Cruzeiro. |
On Saturday Botafogo beat Vitória 1-0 with a great free kick from Marcelo Cordeiro and then Atlético Goianiense recorded their third consecutive win with an impressive 0-1 away result at Guaraní.
Sunday saw three local derbies, Corinthians ended their dismal run of results with a 1-0 win over local rivals Palmeiras and are now within one point of the leading pair after leaders Cruzeiro were beaten 3-4 at home by local rivals Atlético Mineiro, who have climbed out of the relegation zone at the expense of Vitória. 4 wins in the last 5 games makes Atlético Mineiro the form team in the division. Two of the other teams faced eachother, Goiás leapfrogging Avai into 18th place with a 1-0 win.
Sunday's other local derby ended in a 2-2 draw between Grêmio and Internacional, both sides missing their chance to close the gap on the leading three teams.
Other teams will be ruing their missed opportunities, Fluminense could have gone 2 points clear at the top but they could only manage a draw against Atlético Paranaense and 4th placed Santos missed the opportunity to close the gap on the top three after throwing away a 2-0 half time lead to lose 2-3 at home to bottom of the table Grêmio Prudente.
São Paulo have to admit that their title aspirations are now very unrealistic after a 2-0 defeat to Ceará left them in 9th place 10 points behind the leaders with only 7 games left, the 2nd goal of the game was a great strike from Diego Sacoman, but came from some pathetic defending. In another mid table encounter Vasco da Gama played out a 1-1 draw with Flamengo, which featured a freak goal for Vasco's Cesinha, when a deflected clearance bounced off the crossbar straight into his path, Flamengo equalised late in the game after Vasco's Dedé got himself sent off.
