Match reports

On 16 March Argentina played Venezuela in a friendly match to inaugurate the new Estadio Bicentenario (Bicentenary Stadium) in San Juan that was built to host games in Copa América 2011 which kicks off in July. Manager Sergio Batista selected all of his players from Argentine domestic football, with the exception of Estudiantes and Argentinos Juniors and Estudiantes players due to their fixtures this week in Copa Libertadores 2011.

The game started well for Argentina with Boca Juniors midfielder scoring the opening goal in the 20th minute. Argentina then hit the post and had a Maxi Moralez goal incorrectly disallowed for offside before Daniel Arismendi equalised for the visitors in the 29th minute. A brace from Boca Juniors striker Pablo Mouche either side of half time re-established Argentina's control over the game before Gimnasia y Esgrima striker Luciano Aued added a fourth in the 75th minute with a nice turn and strike to add some gloss to the result. Pablo Mouche was particularly pleased with the his performance, having scored his first two goals for the Argentina national team, the second of which he dribbled from his own half before firing in a long range shot.

The first South American result from the official FIFA international break was a real shock for World Cup semi-finalists Uruguay who suffered a 2-0 defeat against Estonia in freezing conditions in Tallinn. Both of the goals came in a five minute spell in the second half with Vassiljev and Zahovaiko bagging a goal each to secure a famous victory for the tiny Baltic nation.

Bolivia suffered a 2-0 defeat in their game against Panama and Venezuela managed a 0-2 away win against Jamaica. Chile managed a creditable 1-1 draw against Portugal in Leiria. The hosts took an early lead but Chile levelled the scores before half time with a long range free kick from Matiás Fernández. Colombia recorded an impressive 2-0 win against Ecuador in Madrid. Freddy Guarín put the Colombians one goal ahead with a cracking free kick in the first half and Radamel Falcao broke the Ecuadorian defensive line and took the ball around Ecuadorian keeper Alex Domínguez in the second half.

Paraguay couldn't stop their post World Cup slump in form in their game in Mexico. The visitors were their own worst enemies in the first half conceding three goals through sloppy defending, allowing Mexican players free passage in all three goals. They pulled one back in the second half to make the score 3-1 but that too owed a lot to sloppy defending.

Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw by the United States in New Jersey. The visitors opened the scoring after some wonderful interplay between Ezequiel Lavezzi and Lionel Messi created an opportunity for Ángel Di María which Tim Howard could only parry into the path of Esteban Cambiasso who blasted the ball into the net on 41 minutes. The USA equalised from a set play, a near straight free kick from distance caused chaos in the Argentine box allowing Colombian born second half substitute Juan Agudelo to bag his second goal in only three games for the USA.

On Sunday Brazil cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win against Scotland in London with Neymar scoring both of the goals. The first was a lovely angled finish and the second was a penalty he earned for himself after Charlie Adam clipped his heels.

Bolivia avoided defeat in an away match for the first time in eight games with a 1-1 draw against Guatemala. Last time they avoided defeat on the road was with a 0-0 draw in Brazil in 2008. Ricardo Pedriel was the hero for Bolivia hitting a second half equaliser. Peru have not won against Ecuador in four games after they played out a 0-0 draw in Den Haag. Chile recorded their third consecutive win in games against Colombia and are on a run of six games without defeat after a 2-0 win in the Netherlands.

Uruguay recovered from their defeat against Estonia in freezing conditions last week to record a 2-3 win against the Republic of Ireland. Diego Lugano put the visitors into the lead but Shane Long equalised with a header only three minutes later. Uruguay scored two more before half time, a great finish from Edison Cavani and a smart dink over the goalkeeper from Abel Hernández. The Irish got a goal back early in the second half through a Keith Fahey penalty but they could not find an equaliser.

Argentina played out a dull 0-0 draw with Costa Rica, they had rested several of their key players such as Messi, Cambiasso, Zanetti and Lavezzi for the game, however a turgid goalless draw with a country ranked 49 places below them by FIFA hardly seems like good preparation for Copa América. Meanwhile Paraguay recorded an impressive 0-1 win against the USA, Argentina's last opponents. Óscar Cardozo scored the only goal of the game which demonstrated Gerardo Martino's ability to get the best out of a more technically limited squad of players than those at Argentina's disposal, through tactical discipline and strong team spirit. The result was particularly pleasing given their post World Cup slump in form.

The last game of the March friendlies was Venezuela's 1-1 draw against Mexico in California. Both of the goals came from second half corner kicks and the final result is yet another positive sign for the Venezuelans who have now matched a decent Mexico side twice this year.

Match reports

On Tuesday 8 February Peru managed a 1-0 win against Panama which is the least their fans would have expected after the embarassment of being beaten by the central American minnows back in October 2010. Peru continue to perform below their fans expectations but they can comfort themselves that they are not doing as badly as Bolivia who suffered a 1-2 defeat to European minnows Latvia on Wednesday 9 February.

The match between Argentina and Portugal was predictably billed by the unimaginative as Messi vs Ronaldo however the biggest battle of the evening was the players against a really poor pitch in Geneva. Both players managed to score in the game, Ronaldo equalising Madrid team mate Angel Di María's opener for Argentina and Messi hitting a late penalty to give Argentina the 2-1 win.

Messi's penalty put a positive spin on a game that saw many more chances come about through poor distribution, unforced errors and bad defending than from the quality of the attacking players. The biggest plus for Argentina was the fact that three players made their international debut. Former Estudiantes defender Marcos Rojo played the full 90 while Anderlecht's Lucas Biglia and Vélez Sársfield's Juan Manuel Martínez made their debuts from the bench.

Brazil went down to a 1-0 defeat against a France side that suffered a humiliating and shameful first round exit from the World Cup. Brazil can use the fact that they played more than half the game with ten men after Hernanes was sent off for a chest high lunge but defeat in this game means that if they lose to the Netherlands in March they will have gone down to three consecutive defeats for the first time in nearly 10 years.

Colombia did themselves proud by frustrating the World champions Spain in Madrid with a strong defensive display however David Silva ruined their party by hitting an 86th minute winner.

Venezuela will be disappointed to have gone behind twice against Costa Rica but they can be pleased that they recovered to draw the game 2-2. Ecuador also drew their game against Central American opponents, both of the goals came in the opening twelve minutes of their 1-1 draw with Honduras.

Highlights: International friendlies, 17 November 2010

Messi celebrating his last minute winner against Brazil.
On Wednesday the eyes of the football world were on Doha, Qatar. Argentina faced Brazil for the first time since they were humiliatingly beaten 1-3 in Rosario on 6 September 2009 during their torrid World Cup qualification campaign. Both teams had changed manager since the last meeting, Mano Menezes replaced Dunga as Brazil coach after their exit from the World Cup at the quarter final stage and Sergio Batista was officially appointed as the Argentina coach at the beginning of November.

Argentina won the game in the 92nd minute with an excellent goal from Lionel Messi, to give the "Albicelestes" their first win against Brazil with Messi in the team. The contribution of 2nd half substitute Ezequiel Lavezzi cannot be discounted, he was the most exciting player in the second half and his back-heel to set Messi on his way was as good as Messi's finish.

This may have been only be a friendly match but the pressure was on both teams. Argentina desperately need to establish a good run of form going into the Copa América 2011 which they will host. With no qualification tournament for Copa América, international friendlies will be their only preparation. The pressure on Brazil comes from the fans, despite the fact that Dunga led Brazil to the Copa América in 2007 and the 2009 Confederations Cup a large proportion of Brazilian supporters complained about the lack of flair in the team and Dunga's insistence on using two holding midfield players. Brazil did not need to win this particular game as much as Argentina, as their focus is on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, however they did not play with the attacking flair and inventiveness that the Brazilian supporters expect of their national team. if they fail to find a combination of attractive winning football soon the fans are sure to turn on Mano Menezes.

Both teams have had problems to overcome, most football followers would be able to identify Argentina's defence as their weakness, there were changes at the back for Argentina with Zanetti and Samuel back in the team, but two of the main culprits at the World Cup, Demichelis and Heinze keep their places in the squad. The only defender that cannot be considered part of the old guard is 24 year old Spartak Moscow defender Nicolás Pareja, who started the game and had a reasonably solid performance. He was beaten for pace a couple of times by Brazil's latest wonderkid; Neymar, but each time Neymar failed to find a decent cross or pass.

Neymar was one of 8 players in the Brazil squad playing for Brazilian clubs, the only South American based player in the Argentina squad was Andrés D'Alessandro of Brazilian side Internacional, who came on in the 2nd half.

As usual the Argentine midfield and forward line was packed with attacking talent, the team benefited from the inclusion of exciting young players like Valencia's Ever Banega, Palermo's Javier Pastore and Benfica's Angel Di Maria as well as established players like Messi, Mascherano and Higuaín

The main talking point in the Brazil squad was the inclusion of Ronaldinho, who's most notable contribution was a cheeky back-heel shot that went straight into the hands of Argentina goalkeeper Romero. The only other outstanding chance the Brazilians had was a half volley from Dani Alves that hit the bar. Messi came close to opening the scoring in the first half with an outstanding long range shot that clipped the angle of crossbar and post.

The second half saw the introduction of Lavezzi who seemed to have a little more industry and determination than Javier Pastore. As Ronaldinho was withdrawn midway through the 2nd half the ESPN commentators were making it out to be his final moment in a Brazil shirt, but at the age of 30 that seems a little premature. His replacement Douglas was making his Brazil debut at the age of 28.

The game seemed to be petering out into a stale 0-0 draw when Brazil gave the ball away childishly in midfield with only a minute or so of injury time remaining, Messi and Lavezzi combined and Messi scored a famous goal to get his first taste of victory against the Brazilians.

It is hard to learn anything new from this game. We all knew that Messi is brilliant, Ronaldinho is a shadow of the player he was, Lavezzi is one of Argentina's in form players and Neymar has a lot of potential. The little that could be gleaned from this game is that for some reason Alex Ferguson is backing Qatar's bid to host the 2022 World Cup, that Qatar only has a population of 1.7 million and that if their match day security team can't catch an overweight pitch invader wearing sandals they will struggle to deal with tens of thousands of drunken Englishmen, assuming that England actually qualify.

Other games

Chile marked Marcelo Bielsa's last game in charge with a 2-0 win against Uruguay. Bielsa has stepped down for political reasons and considering the huge progress made by the Chileans since he took over, whoever takes over as manager will have a hell of a job to stop Chile regressing.

Peru and Colombia both had disappointing World Cup qualification campaigns and under new managers they will be hoping that they can make substantial improvements before Copa América kicks off in 2011. Both sides can take positives from their 1-1 draw, Peru scored an absolute blinder of a goal and apart from conceding to a wonder strike Colombia looked reasonably solid.

Cristian Benítez and Walter Ayovi hit a pair of goals each in a convincing 4-1 win for Ecuador against Venezuela.

I'm not sure what Paraguay thought they were going to learn from playing Hong Kong, they won 0-7 and the 3rd goal illustrates the calibre of opponent they chose to face in their last game of 2010.
