Cristobal Jorquera vs Unión Española, Chilean Primera 2011 - Golazo
After their worst start to a league season ever, Chilean side Colo-Colo began recovering after the sacking of manager Diego Cagna. Cristobal Jorquera was one of the stars of the revival, firstly with this goal in a 3-0 win against Palestino and then another cracking goal in their next league game, a 2-1 win against Unión Española.
Golazo: Cristobal Jorquera vs Palestino, Torneo Nacional 2011
29 time champions Colo-Colo made their worst ever start to a league season at the beginning of the Chilean national championship in 2011 losing three of their first four games to find themselves bottom of the table. A humiliating 1-5 defeat against Universidad de Concepción was enough to finish manager Diego Cagna, who had earned himself the nickname "Despreocupado" for his relaxed and unconcerned attitude towards the pathetic displays from his team. Things got worse for Colo-Colo before they got better, they suffered a humiliating 5-2 defeat againsr Cerro Porteño in Copa Libertadores 2011.
Things began to improve for the Chilean giants with a 0-3 win against Palestino, their second goal was this excellent strike from Cristobal Jorquera.
Lujos: Claudio Borghi & Hugo Rubio nearly score a brilliant goal
In 1992 Argentine forward Claudio Borghi joined Chilean side Colo-Colo, despite only staying for one season he became an icon at the club and returned to manage the side in 2006 leading them to four consecutive league titles. Back in 1992 he was involved in this incredible move in a game against Palestino which nearly resulted in one of the best goals ever, however Hugo Rubio's volley hit the bar.
Game of the week: 1 December 2010, Cobreloa 2-3 Universidad Cátolica
OK, so the standard of football in Chile is generally not as high as Argentina and Brazil, however this game between championship chasing Universidad Cátolica and two times Copa Libertadores finalists Cobreloa was a brilliant match.
Universidad Cátolica and championship rivals Colo-Colo were tied on points at the top of the table with two games of the season remaining. They kicked off at the same time on 28 November 2010 with the pressure on both sides to win. UC came back from 1-0 down to establish a 2-1 lead only for Cobreloa to equalise with 17 minutes to go. Argentine midfielder Juan Eluchans then hit a dramatic winner for Universidad Cátolica on 88 minutes and at the final whistle it became clear that Colo-Colo had lost against O'Higgins leaving UC three points clear with only one game of the season left.
Part of the game of the week series.
Golazo: Matías Fernández vs O'Higgins 2006
In 2006 Argentine born Chilean Matías Fernández scored this spectacular goal for Colo-Colo against Club Deportivo O'Higgins. Later in 2006 he was named South American footballer of the year, the first Chilean to win the award since Marcelo Salas in 1997.
He soon earned a lucrative move to European football where he has played for Villarreal and Sporting Lisbon.
