Match reports

Boca Juniors were 1-2 away winners at Lanús when the top two faced each other on Sunday.

Atlético Rafaela moved up into second place with an impressive 1-3 away win at San Lorenzo.

The two championship winning sides of 2010 Estudiantes and Argentinos Juniors played out a thrilling game near the foot of the table, with Estudiantes winning their first home league game in 10 attempts with a 4-3 victory.

Also near the foot of the table Banfield ended their run of six consecutive defeats without a goal with a 0-1 away win at All Boys and Olimpo recorded a decent 2-2 draw with in form Godoy Cruz.

Colón kept up their good start to the season with a 0-1 away win at Independiente but Racing Club found themselves slipping backwards after their third draw in four attempts, a 1-1 draw at Unión.

Reigning champions Vélez Sársfield could only manage a 1-1 draw at Newell's Old Boys, leaving them without a league win in four attempts. Tigre kept up their decent start to the season with a 2-2 draw against Arsenal and Belgrano won the tie between two of the Primera División new boys with a 0-1 away win at San Martín.

Match reports

In the opening game of the round league leaders Atlético Rafaela could only manage a 0-0 home draw against Newell's Old Boys, a second consecutive clean sheet for the visitors and a third game without defeat sees them remain in a comfortable mid table position.

In the second game Colón secured a comfortable 3-1 home win against San Lorenzo to move to within two points of the overnight leaders. Veteran striker and club legend Esteban Fuertes bagged two goals and Federico Higuaín rounded off the win with a late third after Emmanuel Gigliotti had pulled one back for the visitors.

Estudiantes suffered a 1-3 home defeat to Tigre, a result that would have been mindblowinh a year ago, but these days Estudiantes have the worst home record in the division having gone nine games without a home win. Estudiantes lie second bottom with only two points cushioned from bottom place only by the dreadful form of Banfield. Tigre have slowly crept up into fifth place in the table, inspired perhaps by the fact that they look certain to be relegated if they don't achieve a hefty points tally over the 2011-12 season.

Racing Club kept themselves in the title chase with a 1-0 home win against Olimpo, a valuable three points it was, but no spectacle like the cracking 4-3 result the last time they hosted Olimpo in the league.

The result of the weekend was undoubtedly Godoy Cruz thrashing All Boys 6-1. After a stuttering start to the season El Tomba have started firing on all cylinders as All Boys found to their cost. The visitors went ahead midway through the first half but then found themselves blasted from all angles as six different Godoy Cruz players bagged themselves a goal each.

Banfield continued their astonishingly bad start to the season with a sixth consecutive defeat, having failed to score in any of the games. To be fair to them they have not been badly thrashed in most of them, Sunday's 0-1 home defeat to Arsenal was their fourth consecutive defeat by one goal to nil.

Belgrano crept up the table again with a convincing 2-0 win against Independiente and Unión another of the newly promoted sides from the interior pulled off the shock result of the day with a 0-1 away win against the reigning Argentine champions Vélez Sársfield.

Boca Juniors climbed above Atlético Rafaela to the top of the table with a 1-0 home win against San Martín and in the last game of the round Lanús joined Boca at the top of the table with a thumping 0-4 away win at Argentinos Juniors.

Every single team in the bottom seven at the end of the 6th round lost their games, while Atlético Rafaela were the only side in the top nine not to manage a win.

Preview Fecha 6 Apertura 2011 Argentina

Preview and predictions for the 6th round of games of the Argentine Apertura 2011 tournament.

Preview

Unfortunately, due to lack of time I have not had the opportunity to make predictions for the first five rounds of the Apertura tournament.

My best points tally from Clausura 2011 was 16 points (5 correct scorelines & another correct outcome) and my worst was just 2 points, hopefully I can beat both of those records during Apertura 2011.

In the first game on Friday evening league leaders Atlético Rafaela host Newell's Old Boys. The two sides have not met in a competitive game for many years so the head-to-head stats are pretty much useless. Newell's have looked much better than they did as they struggled to a 19th place in the Clausura however I fancy the home side to continue  the top of the table feel good factor for at least one more round with a win in this game.

The second game features two sides with ambitions to finish in the top five, San Lorenzo suffered an embarrassing 0-1 home defeat to Belgrano last weekend and they have not scored more than a single goal in an away game against Colón since 1995.

In the early kick off on Saturday Godoy Cruz will attempt to bag their third consecutive league win and their fifth game without defeat in all competitions when they face All Boys. The only time this fixture has been played before in the top flight was a 1-0 win for Godoy Cruz at the back end of Clausura 2011, only a few months ago.

Estudiantes have only won two of their previous 22 games, and one of them was their midweek win against Arsenal which was not enough to prevent them from being eliminated from Copa Sudamericana, it did however end their astonishing run of 9 home games without a win. Tigre will be tough opponents, they are fighting for Primera Division survival and have started the season pretty well.

Saturday's last game features two of the most entertaining sides from Clausura 2011. Racing Club have started the Apertura in fine form but their visitors Olimpo have struggled after losing many of their key players from last season. Racing have a surprisingly poor home record against Olimpo having only won two of the previous six encounters. the most recent encounter between the sides was a thoroughly enjoyable 4-3 win for Racing, hopefully Saturday's encounter will be of similar entertainment value.

As the results come in I will fill in the actual scores and colour code the predicted scores, green for exact scoreline , yellow for correct result and red for completely wrong. Each green score gets three points, each yellow score gets one point and red scores get nothing. Copa Sudamericana 2011 Segundo fase

Details and highlights of the second phase of the Copa Sudamericana 2011 championship.

Details

The second phase of Copa Sudamericana 2011 was the stage at which the biggest sides joined the competition. 8 Brazilians sides and six Argentine sides entered at this stage as well as the top seeded clubs from the other eight nations.

The first four ties to be completed were the ones featuring Brazilian sides. São Paulo came back from a 2-1 defeat in their first leg against Ceará to win the tie 4-2 on aggregate. Botafogo won both of their ties against Atlético Mineiro to progress to the next stage, Flamengo also cruised through their tie against Atlético Paranaense winning both legs 1-0 and Vasco Da Gama managed to scrape through on away goals against Palmeiras.

Of the Argentine sides two of the three ties were won by the underdogs. Arsenal de Sarandí, the minnows that won Copa Sudamericana in 2007 overcame Estudiantes and Godoy Cruz (a team that has never won a major trophy) eliminated Lanús on the away goals rule. Reigning Argentine champions Vélez Sársfield struggled in their first leg against Argentinos Juniors but progressed thanks to a thumping 4-0 win in their home leg. These three Argentine sides will be joined in the quarter finals by Independiente, who received a bye as reigning champions.
